At the very least, if you want it to be noticeable, you could paint it in the tartar red paint scheme that it got in 1968 just prior to receiving the “Ronan” paint scheme. |

I don't remember them in true olive drab, only the dirty brown it quickly turned into and stayed that way until painted bright red while on the RR.I do like fantasy, what-if paint schemes though. Since they spent most of their life on the Eastern Division, the BMT Queens blue/orange scheme would look interesting on them, as with the Q's, such as an orange stripe along the top of the side and orange end doors. |

However, the Queens Division of the BMT which included the Astoria and Flushing Lines was part of the Southern Division not the Eastern. The so called “dirty brown” you observed was merely what the olive drab became when covered with steel dust. It was the same color as the R-21 through 30 (excluding the R-29s). For whatever reason while the R-16s were painted love drab, their sister care the IRT R-17s were painted in a maroon color which was not repeated with the R-21s through 28. |

There was only one Q unit that got the orange and blue paint scheme and it was specifically for a Queens day celebration. The cars were then transferred back to Myrtle for the rest of their service life. The reason for the colors is that they are the official NY state and NY City colors and the cars were originally painted in that scheme for the 1939 World’s Fair. |

One was that they are the colors of NYC and the other is that since they were sort of a replacement for both the NY Giants and the Bkln Dodgers, the orange of the Mets logo on the caps was reminiscent of the Giants and the blue was a tribute to the Dodgers. |
