Hurricane Sandy was pretty close to a citywide blackout. Because Manhattan below 39th was blacked out, it was very prominent even if most of the city still had power. |

Just like in 1977:(I was only two months old when the '65 blackout happened). In '77, where I grew up on the upper east side, the lights came back on early the next morning (just after 7:00 AM and where I lived was as I understood it just the second area to get power back then), whereas LITERALLY across the street from where I lived power was out for ANOTHER 15 hours (or until around 10:30 PM)! |

Absolutely, and that blackout lasted four and a half days.What I remember were how some people were demanding the New York Stock Exchange be forced to give up their generators to hospitals that did not have them at the time. |

I remember the lower Manhattan blackout of 1981 very well because I was doing messenger work that afternoon in Manhattan and had gotten dinner before trying to make a phone call and unable to find a phone that work. What was interesting was power along lower Broadway was still generally on (lights were not out), but when I got down to South Ferry to take the M15 bus uptown, that's when I saw what happened.I first had gotten on an M1 that was crowded, but that bus actually got stuck so I eventually walked over and got a Wall Street express bus that was jammed. Ironically, when the bus got on the FDR Drive, traffic was unusually light that evening. Got back to where I lived then about an hour later than I would have otherwise. |

I was working in Brooklyn at that time but as luck would have it, I had to go to Manhattan that morning. I think I took the M14 eastbound and then walked to the Brroklyn Bridge, walked over it and boarded a subway in Brooklyn. Mayor Koch was on the bridge at the time asking everyone to follow him over the bridge. When he saw an old lady panting and walking behind him. He asked the reporters to wait, while he waked with the woman back to the beginning of the bridge. I followed them out of curiosity. He stopped the first car he saw and ordered the driver to take that woman over the bridge. Then he rejoined the reporters not saying anything to them about what he did. I was the only witness. |

That's because the Rockaways got their electricity from LILCO, not Con Ed in those days, and so were unaffected. LILCO disconnected itself from the grid to avoid being dragged down by the cascade failure which knocked out a goodly portion of the NYC area. |

I was on my way home from Queens College. A classmate of mine suggested that we take the bus, before we actually chose to take the subway.Our E train had R4 659 as the lead car. Now the TA, at that time, had installed new headlights on the R6s, 7s and 9s, and R4 467, but not 659 or any of the other R4s. We got a third of the way into the express tunnel west of 65th Street when the power went out. We were stuck for 5 1/2 hours before being led out. In the meantime, people peed in between the cars. I walked all the way home from where we came out the emergency exit to W. 25th Street west of 9th Avenue, where I lived at that time. The buses--even those that quit early, like the 9th & 10th Avenue--ran 24 hours. My classmate said to me, "I told you we should have taken the bus home!" But it was probably the first time--and the only time--I had ever seen a sky full of stars in New York City! |

The JFK case was a difficult one to investigate in that era. I saw a very plausible documentary which posited that while Oswald did indeed pull off the first two successful shots, a young Secret Service agent riding behind JFK's limo, inadvertently fired the fatal shot, when he fell, and the rifle he was carrying went off, its safety having been disengaged.The cover up was done in part to protect the agent from the unimaginable psychological effects of having killed a president, however accidentally, and to spare the world that horrible truth. The filmmakers give a ver cogent, sober presentation, complete with ballistic reenactment and supporting information. My heart actually went out to the poor agent, who probably spent the rest of his life with that on his head, if the story is accurate. It does suggest a very compelling reason for sealing certain records pertaining to the incident, for decades to come. |
