Upgrade the remaining R-32s. |
|
Posted by #3 West End Jeff on Sun Oct 18 01:00:54 2015 Now that the R-32s will remain in service until at least 2019, I suggest that they should be upgraded. They should have the robin's egg blue interior restored, but with modern specifications. The seats should be like those in the R-142s, R-143s, R-160s. They should have the modern electronic signs in the interiors and strip maps. The flip dot sign at the ends of the cars on the exterior should be replaced with the same type used on the R-142s, R-143s & R-160s. Then the running gear should be the same as in the R-142s, R-143s & R-160s. Then the cars should be arranged in 4 or 5 car sets instead of married pairs.#3 West End Jeff |

Since the newer trains run AC traction systems, vs DC on the older, that is almost building a new car reusing the shell. I really like the R-32, but that is highly unlikely. |

I would save them all however to send the R46 or R68 to SIR to replace that St Louis R44 junk over there. I noticed yesterday more structural body wear as they are capping over the rim around the top corners of the side doors.R32's need an interior paint job. 1988 was a long time ago. I do not think replacing that almost useless flip dot end signs 222 times with an LED would break the bank. I don't see what use there is in forming 4 car sets, not with their mediocre MDBF, as it would make matters worse. There bouncy ride can be corrected with new springs, which would not break the bank either. Beyond that, there is no point in doing anything else. |

A whole raft of electronic signs would likely require a new auxiliary power supply as the existing system doesn't have sufficient capacity. Interiors are easy enough to fix but going to R160 type trucks would mean replacing the carbody bolster and most likely all of the end underframe. You'd be better off starting from scratch - the shells aren't worth that much. That said, the shells are in good shape so they may end up outlasting some of the R46s. They do need a mini-overhaul with upgrades to the doors, air conditioning, propulsion and auxiliary systems. The cars haven't maintained as needed to reliably run for another 5+ years. |

I don't think you understand what the issue is here. The issue is that BrooklynBus posts all kind of BS and many people here and on many other websites tell him, rightly so, that he is wrong. But he refuses to listen. Then he gets fired from a job where his entire job was writing about the topics that he talks about here. So if he's so smart and so correct about all those topics, then why did he get fired from his job that dealt 100% with those topics? The question is 100% relevant to this forum and appropriate for discussion. |

R32 could get a mini-makeover like the R36 WF. It would improve reliability.Remember the NYCTA experiments with hydraulic brakes and flywheels? The MTA could also use it as an opportunity to try out: Wheelsets with axle differentials, independent wheels, radial steering axles, linear eddy current brakes, magnetic track brakes. Modifing the ends of the married pairs to create enclosed vestibules. One of the car end doors would be kept open (but closable), while the other is closed and unlocked as an odor/smoke/fire door. Install experimental automatic people catchers to catch suicidal and wayward persons. Install local door controls to limit cooled air loss during the summer and heated air loss in winter. V2V communications as an alternate or backup to CBTC. |

Why hasn't the subway adopted enclosed vestibules for the car ends that are permanently or semi-permanently linked together? Railroads have been doing it for lord knows how many decades. At the very least, it'll deal with the danger of moving between cars. |

Track brakes can be brutal on rail heads.Track brakes are emergency brakes. Their benefit is half the stopping distance over the anemic emergency braking NYCT currently uses. Were they installed on all equipment after their introduction on the Bluebirds, most subsequent rear end collisions would have been prevented. So too, would many deaths caused by trains running over people on the tracks. |
