It would seem to me that just drilling a 1" hole and dropping a light and camera through it would be sufficient. Of course, drilling a 1" hole would be difficult enough, and watch out for sewer, gas and electrical. Nobody really has to go down there. Or do it at the bulkhead... |

So I took a ride down to 76th St and Pitkin today, coming from Cross Bay on my bike and these are my observations:1. Pitkin Ave gets wider at 77th St or thereabouts when you are coming from the east. Much wider, enough for a 4 track subway underneath. Up until that point it is just an average two way street. 2. There was at least one corner building on a cross street that looks as if the adjoining building had been torn down, except that there was no room for an adjoining building, again, maybe to widen the street for a 4 track subway underneath. 3. There were some grates at Conduit that seemed out of place. 4. At Grant Ave, the grates go straight along Pitkin, even though the tracks angle off. This could also just be up to the bulkhead. 5. At 74th St the deli looks like it has a subway entrance next to it, except it isn't. 6. The bus driver behind me was getting impatient that I was looking around and not just moving. My own conclusion is that the street was at least readied for building the subway, whether anything was ever dug out is inconclusive based on what I saw. I'm sure I'm not the first person to see this. Here's a speculation though, maybe there was a coverup because they forced people out of their homes and then didn't build it. |

Posted by randyo on Mon Sep 7 14:19:03 2015, in response to Re: Warning! This Post is About 76th Street, posted by zac on Sun Sep 6 21:33:09 2015. If you had been following some of my posts on the topic. you might have seen several items about the area that it takes a bit of research to discover. Until the IND subway came into the area, Pitkin Av ended at the city line and its current path was blocked by private property. The Current path of Pitkin Av east of 79 St is actually the continuation of another street called South Rd which explains why the current path of Pitkin Av angles slightly south at the point. From City Line to 79 St Pitkin Av was through routed to meet with the routing of South and make a continuos thoroughfare much the same way that 6 Av in Manhattan was through routes between W 3 St and Canal when that portion of the IND was built. At the time of the construction of the subway through that area there were no homes for people to be forced out of. Unfortunately, while checking the NYC archives for aerial photos of the area, there seems to be a gap between 1930 when the street did not go through and 1950 when it did, so I was unable to find the exact date of the through routing. In any case it does seem that Pitkin Av was through routed with South Road for the specific purpose of providing a through street for the subway to pass under. |

The Q-7 Bus was extended to Euclid Ave I believe at about the same time IND service to Euclid Ave started. The Q-7 Bus travels that Pitkin Ave to South Rd connection. It may be those events coincide. Heavy emphasis on may be. Perhaps a BUSCHAT maven can help out here. |

Another problem is, according to most alleged eye witness accounts, only the west end of the station was built. Was 76 St supposed to be the east end of the station, the west end, or the middle? If it was the east end, the west end would be at Drew St, which is only 500 feet from the current bulkhead at Eldert Lane. The GPR survey would have to start at Drew St or even Eldert Lane and proceed east from there, a potential time consuming and expensive process. |

It all depends on whether there was a coverup and how serious it was. I have seen plans for the BMT 4 Av subway S/O 59 St which as most people may know is half of a 4 track subway as far as 86 St. The existing 2 tracks of the subways would have become the S/B lcl and exp tracks of a 4 track subway if the N/B side had ever been built. The only easily observable evidence of the N/B tracks is the short section N/O 69 St where from a N/B train, the trackways of the proposed N/B tracks may be seen. The plans show no construction of any kind other than the afore mentioned section ever having been built yet there are supposed to be short sections of subway tunnel for the N/B tracks at various places along 4 Av in Bay Ridge. According to an old PSC report I have seen about the construction of the 4 Av subway, When Bkln Edison was building circuit breaker chambers in the area, the company was requested to build them as sections of subway tunnel in the even they would need to be captured for rapid transit use. That they were not specifically built for subway construction per se seems to account for the reason that the tA has no actual records of their construction or existence. It could be possible that due to various other construction projects in the area of 76 St at the time that the parts of 76 St station that were built were built by a contractor not directly associated with the B of T and therefore, the NYCTA would not necessarily have any records of its existence. |
