Future G.O. on J/M/Z..R32 to M |
|
Posted by caine515 on Sat Aug 29 12:48:29 2015 im reading of a g.O. to eventually begin on the J/M/Z line and wondering how major it's supposed to be that R32 would be going to the M line. Any information is appreciated. |

I have heard 3rd hand all R32's move to the M around when the J's supply would have been heading back to the C. They supposedly want a lightweight car on the M since the Myrtle cut is concrete, it is falling apart, and new concrete has to set.Standing on Jamaica A around the Rockaway Line crossing, the el is pretty high up. I have pretty good ears. I find the R32's to be the least noisy, the R42's the nosiest, the R160's somewhere in between. If the noise is a function of weight and/or vibration, they are making the right decision. |

Is this the portion of the ramp down by Fresh Pond yard? Only operated out to Metro once by a reroute, so don't know the features of the upper Myrt very well after all these years. Where's the concrete portion that's having issues? Trying to remember the location. That's going to be some real downtime when they get around to fixing it. :( |

M trains going from Essex to Myrtle are considered going southbound (since Metropolitan Av is south of 71 Av), while J trains going from Essex to Myrtle are considered going northbound, at least according to the MTA's timetables. |

To understand railroad directions on the BMT, you need to remember that pre-Unification the BRT and BMT were west-east, not north-south. The west terminals were Park Row/Fulton Ferry and Chambers Street/Broadway Ferry.West became north and east became south. So Metropolitan Ave., Jamaica and Lefferts Blvd. were all East now South terminals. Remember we're talking about railroad directions, not public timetables. If you have any doubt, remember that on the BMT and IND, 1 and 3 tracks are heading railroad south and 2 and 4 are railroad north. This messes up compass directions some, but we're running a railroad, not navigating a ship. |

The only reason this thread even happened is because a question about information from NYCTF was asked. It's only a matter of time before Subchat becomes more and more deserted, especially with users like Terrapin Station and WillD acting like they float 10,000 feet above everyone. Even users who use to regularly contribute around here have left, because of those two so called transit fans or whatever anyone wants to call them. The couple of things that keeps Subchat running are when really good questions about historical transit equipment, lines, etc. or when someone asks a question about something they heard from either Facebook or NYCTF. That's it really. |

It's my understanding that on the BMT, at least after unification, everything going from Manhattan to Brooklyn was considered southbound; in the other direction it was condidered northbound. This created an interesting problem when they had the Nassau loop operation. A loop train passing through Chambers St would change its subway direction without changing its physical direction. Strictly speaking the Jamaica bound J should be considered southbound, but I think it's listed as northbound in the public timetable because that's the compass direction it mostly follows in Manhattan. |

The railroad direction at Chambers Street changes at the south end of Chambers Street, and has since 1931.The BRT/BMT had other situations where trains changed railroad directions: the Franklin-Nassau at Coney Island, for example, or Broadway L / Fulton L off-hour trains at the ENY Loop. |

When I started working for the TA in 1966, the rule was that trains passing through Bkln enroute to Manhattan were northbound regardless of point of origin. All Eastern Division outer terminals were therefore south terminals. The change was made first with the QJ when it was through routed to the Brighton Line and it then became southbound towards Stl and northbound towards Jamaica. When the M became the Brighton Lcl, tin then became south to Stl and north to Met but the QJ, now renamed the J since it was truncated at Broad St was not changed back. The KK and subsequent K remained northbound to Manhattan until the cessation of service in 1976. Since the M is now correctly northbound to Manhattan, I have felt that the J should also be changed back to its pre Chrystie direction but nobody at the MTA seems to have enough sense to make the change. |
