I know it's rude to correct Subject lines but South Brooklyn and southern are not the same thing. But he didn't say "South Brooklyn." He said "south Brooklyn." The first is the name of a neighborhood. The second is a general description, as indicated by the lower case "s" in "south." So the the subject line was correct to begin with. And my pickiness trumps your pickiness. :) |

It seems likely that it would have had to be separate station housesbehind the platforms, as in the Jackson and Prospect Av. stations on the (2)(5). Bob |

Not really the same, the "N train" and the "D train" are still severable. The IND South Brooklyn Line and the BMT Culver Line can only be operated as a single unit. |

No, Brooklyn Line was the early IND designation for the line between Jay St-Church Ave, prior to the Culver el connection. GG B'KLYN-QUEENS LOCAL B'KLYN-CHURCH AVE, AND BROOKLYN-SMITH-9the ST. |

You could ask why lines in the Bronx are mostly above ground as well. There just wasn't a reason to spend the extra money to put them underground. |

Sometimes, I saw it called the IND Prospect Park subway. They couldn't call it the IND Culver because it hadn't been connected, prior to 1954. |

The IND. however was not always consistent in their signage. The south destination on all the IND cars read simple Smith- 9th Street” and did not contain the word “Bkln” as the Church Av sign did. Queens destinations up to Kew Gardens silly read “Queens-Forest Hills” and “Queens-Kew Gardens” until the line was extended to 169 St and the destinations read “Jamaica-Parsons Blvd” and Jamaica 179 St” and eventually”Jamaica 1789 St” even though the signs at many of the station entrances read “Queensboro 8th Avenue” including those in the Jamaica section of Queens. |

Back in the day, older people (older than me, anyway) tended to call the IND the "8th Avenue Subway" even when most of it was no longer on 8th Avenue. |
