I'm not the biggest fan of modern trains, but I would imagine the people who come up with the designs of these cars will have thought of that, so it won't be a issue. The 142As getting converted into 188s will probably run for like 55 years.Aren't the Gennies that Amtrak have are rather computerized? And they are just shy of 20 years old and they are fine and go though much more abuse than any LIRR MU. |

I don't know if the Amtrak Gennies are so fine. They get quite a lot of enroute road failures in the middle of nowhere. The M-1's and M-3's have/will be scrapped at 30 - 35 years. Budd MU's ought to last 45-50 years. Their obsolete technology is what does it. Today's NTT trains will do no better. |

When I used to cab ride the old NYC Harlem Division, the engineer and C/R didn’t even comprise a crew, the engineer and at that time fireman comprised the engine crew and raw C/R, brakeman and asst C/Rs comprised another. The engine crews changed at North White Plains when electrics were swapped for diesels. The train crews continued on to Brewster or other points north. |

Their life got extended to whatever age the 188s lifespan is. They recieved a lot of upgrades and are much better cars then when tbey debuted. |

AsI mentioned in a couple of other posts, the IND R-1s through 9s and all the IRT (and BMT/IND care for that matter) postwar equipment from the R-12s through the R-36s was fully compatible and the contracts for the NYCTA SMEEs actually specified that the cars be fully compatible without all other R types from the R-10s on up. When I was in the schedule office and the R-62s were being discussed, the plan was to also have them fully compatible with all other postwar NYCTA equipment.Yes, and as I mentioned in other posts, THEY DON'T WANT THEM TO BE COMPATIBLE. And I'd bet there are good reasons for it. At my worst, I have a lot more operating and planning experience in the field of mass transit than you will ever have, so that definitely qualifies me to make judgments of that kind!!!!!How do you know? That said, you can't even understand what I'm telling you, so it seems you are either a bit rusty or are way behind the times. |
