Posted by Mitch45 on Sun Mar 29 07:20:51 2015, in response to Daily Miracle (1961), posted by TransitChuckG on Sat Mar 28 08:08:26 2015. Thanks. The film seriously misrepresented how the student got from Staten Island to his destination. How did he get to school using only a bus and train? If this film was manufactured in 1961, the Verrazano was not open yet (it opened in 1964) so there would be no bus service directly to Manhattan. Thus, he would have to take the Ferry to get to Manhattan. And unless he lived in St. George, he would have to either take a bus or the SIRT to get to the Ferry Terminal, unless he wanted to take a rather long walk. And once he got to Manhattan, he would either have to take another train or walk to the nearest A train station, which, if I'm not mistaken, is Broadway-Nassau (now Fulton Street). And if he's getting on in Manhattan, I assume he's going uptown. And if he's getting on at Broadway-Nassau, why are the people from the Bronx and Queens also getting on there? Something's wrong here. |

I know very little about New York, so what you point out may be a gross error. Chalk it up to "movie magic", like all that stuff people find wrong in every transit movie.:) :) |

The exterior scenes of the train clearly shows a single A on the route sign although the end destination sign is unreadable. Since the interior scenes only show one destination sign reading 168 St, it’s more likely that the sign was improperly set either by vandals (yes, they had them even back then) or possibly left over from a situation where that car was assigned to the AA/BB which was common around then and merely not properly changed back when the train was placed back in A service. |

I’m not entirely sure but there may have been some Jersey company buses that ran from SI through Bayonne and Jersey City and through the Holland tunnel.. |

Haven't seen this film since the late 70's on a school trip to the Transit Museum!!!! And I ALWAYS wanted to see it again! I distinctly recall the scene with the "BB" R-10 train, and the part where the wheels were having flat spots taken out. However, I swear there is a missing scene with a "QT" train arriving at an underground Station. Funny how the narrator says how the trains are not crowed during non-rush hrs at that time. Some lines TODAY are ALWAYS standing room on some parts of the route!!! |

There was very little bus transportation from Staten Island to New York. The Hudson Bus Company ran the Red & Tan 99S route from Perth Amboy thru Staten Island/Bayonne/Jersey City to the PABT but this was never more that 5 round trips all day. I believe one of the IBOCs from Bayonne ran some service from the Port Richmond area into Journal Square but memory is not guaranteed on this.Getting to NYC was a train or bus ride to the ferry. Even after the bridge opened there was the R-7 to Bay Ridge Brooklyn, but it was a few years until the X9 started running from Great Kills Park into NYC via the Bridge/Gowanus/Battery Tunnel. |

That's called artistic license. Something today's journalists have learned well. How to stretch the truth to make it fit a soundbite. Bah…I, too, was mystified how each one of the narrator's quarries all managed to get together shoehorned into in one subway car-an R10, to boot! |

I think they ignored anything that wasn't operated by NYCTA. They mention a fleet of 2000 buses. It seems to me that they didn't count the private bus companies. |

The TA CHOSE to ignore the Ferry since it was run by the Marine and Aviation Dept. and Maybe our Queens rep had to take a private bus to the train. |
