Re: Cuomo's shutdown affecting Democratic Party

Cuomo was NOT, at least in the views of many:

As had been noted elsewhere, in the views of many he was more concerned with how it would look to suburban voters come 2018 when he is up for re-election as Governor (keeping the NYC Subways open while shutting everything else down) as well as not wanting something going wrong to be used against him in a 2020 or '24 Presidential bid, failing to realize that in the process of doing so, he violated Rule #1 of politics and made it in all likelihood much more difficult for the Democrats to regain control of the House and Senate in 2016.

People on Wall Street have much longer memories than people think and something like what Cuomo did is something the so-called "self-centered wealthy" will use to fund Republican candidates in races well outside New York since for now it's the only way THEY can get back at Cuomo. Given the Koch Brothers and their heavily funding Republican candidates (reportedly to the tune of $1 BILLION of their own money this election cycle), it's the last thing the DNC needs and it could bite Cuomo in 2018 if the DNC and their backers withdraw funding from Cuomo for a re-election bid for Governor and instead give it to a candidate to run against him.

Wrong:

High-level execs on Wall Street have VERY long memories and with money and power they would use it to get back at Cuomo in ways most people fail to grasp. Funding candidates in other states to make sure the Republicans keep the House and Senate in 2016 is the one way they can do that currently, then funding their own candidate to go against Cuomo in 2018.

Had Sandy been a bust in 2012 (even if it was the right thing to shut down the subways then), this would have likely happened in 2014 and we very possibly would have had a different Governor of New York when the Blizzard of 2015 hit (Sandy occurred too close to the elections in 2012 to have any significant impact).

No he is not wrong. Unlike you Wall street is fully aware that Cuomo does not care whatsoever about whether or not the GOP keeps the house or senate. There is no point in trying to get back at somebody by doing something you know that they don't care one bit about. It costs a lot of money for nothing.

In this case, it's looking at the bigger national picture.

Unfortunately, as hated as Wall Street is (especially outside New York), some of the "self-centered wealthy" if they feel they were PO'ed don't care about what is done in good faith. They will take it out on Cuomo, and since they can't do it through the courts nor through him directly until 2018, the way they can do it is to fund Republican candidates in House and Senate races outside New York (and especially in areas with expected tight races) who they otherwise would never fund to make sure the Republicans keep control of both branches of the national legislature after 2016.

Given the Koch Brothers are known to be pledging up to $1 BILLION of their own money to fund Republican candidates, this is why PO'ing Wall Street like Cuomo did with the shutdown in my opinion likely stoked the ire of the Dems, knowing the Dems already have an uphill battle to regain control of the House and Senate in 2016. This to me is why the MTA said they would explore keeping the subways open (at least the underground portions) in bad weather.

Add to this how this was likely looked at by people in other countries (especially Japan, which did not shut their systems down even when the earthquake/tsunami hit in 2011 and the Super Typhoon hit late last fall) that often are now clients of Wall Street firms and this is why even if it seemed like the right thing to do, it instead PO'ed Wall Street, which would have been the case whether it was six inches, 36" or 60+". Unfortunately, we are at the point where keeping Wall Street happy likely comes first.

Except I have seen how many of these act, and yes, something like what Cuomo did is a grudge they will hold until they can use it against him, even if not directly.

Having power means a lot to many of these types, and what Cuomo did likely in their minds undermined that power as employees did not show up, likely costing them millions and possibly (even if not immediately) in some cases clients, especially those overseas who in some cases think people have to be at their desks no matter what.

Given the cutthroat society we live in, especially in NYC, that's how many people unfortunately think.

Exactly!

This in the eyes of many was not PO'ing suburban voters by keeping the city system open not realizing that instead, he PO'ed Wall Street and that could have serious blowback in national races in 2016.

Cuomo may not care, but the Democratic Party cares very much and even if Cuomo dislikes his own party, he could have been warned of unintended consequences for him if he ever does it again, EVEN IF it's the right thing to do (like in a Sandy situation, even if in the case of Sandy it WAS the right thing to do). Wouldn't shock me in fact if this happens again Obama is asked to intervene by the DNC and block Cuomo from shutting the underground portions of subways down because of their being vital to getting people who have to be at work there.

If the GOP retains control of the House and Senate in 2016 and it appears it was mainly because of Wall Street funding Republican candidates that won what turned out to be key races they might not have otherwise, the DNC likely turns on Cuomo and heavily funds a candidate of their own to get him out of office in 2018 and uses the shutdown against him.

Of course others needed to get to work that day, BUT execs of Wall Street firms have the power to actually do something if they feel is necessary to get back at Cuomo legally, and that is indirectly hurting him by funding candidates in races outside New York to make sure the GOP retains control of the House and Senate.

That was the first thought, but as said many times, there were NUMEROUS extenuating circumstances that created the issues that caused the problems in 2010, the largest being the timing of when it hit and when it was forecast to become the storm it was. Much of that was changed AFTER that storm to avoid a repeat of that happening, and in fact, NYC had ANOTHER severe storm a couple of months after that and got through that one just fine.
