I always thought the M-1s were a tad mushy suspension wise v/s the ride in the M-3. The M-3 suspension seemed tight making for a better ride. IMO, The M-3 is the Best riding electric car in the fleet. Much Better ride than the M-7. Haven't rode in an M-8 yet. MN still plans to keep their M-3s around till 2020 AFAIK. So first car window views will still be available. Get them while you can! |

But you are still forgetting the charter that required service. tHAT is why it wasn't abandoned decades earlier. Passenger counts were as dismal decades earlier. ADA was the loophole they needed. |

Yep...they'd smoke out the north end platforms at GCT & in the rush hr, Poughkeepsie trains were routed up tk 4 which is completely enclosed from 59 st to 96 st. With a pair in notch 8 pulling 7 bomb coaches, in the first 2 coaches, the fumes were so thick that you coudn't see from one end of a coach to another. This was tolerated for years.The MTA had a smug response, " You want thru trains?? live with it. This is all we got." But god forbid you lit up a cigarette! |

Not all rebuilds worked.I believe it was Republic who did 10, 3 of which went to the LIRR, with an MDBF of 1,900 miles, made the later Super Steels look good by comparison. |

Each rebuild cost $15 mil!! They never ran to expectations. MN got 10 yrs out of them, if that. The ones over on the LIRR got even less. The engineers used to call them "Starships", which was an insult to the Federation! |

Yeah, WTF is wrong with those cars? One of the newer cars, I believe it's the M7 (sorry, am not a RR employee & don't know these details), gives me a headache and so I can't travel very far on them. They seem to be most of the fleet now.They cars make a sort of back-and-forth shivering constantly. It's not bumps in the tracks, as the cars do it constantly once they get to, eh, 35mph or so. It feels like a giant with a nerve tremor has grabbed the train is vibrating it back'n forth along the track. Yeah, bit of a rant, but it pisses me off. This is obviously new, multi-million dollar per car equipment rolling on good welded track. The clanky old cars used on some MNR lines ride just fine, so it's not some difficult to solve problem. |

"Yeah, WTF is wrong with those cars?"Its beginning to look like the truck design of the M-7 is the major culprit in the ride quality & noise.Track quality also a player here.In my travels, less than pristeen(but perfectly safe) track is out there, especially this time of the year when track gangs prefer to replace/repair trackage on thawed out roadbed. I don't know if theres litigation on the horizon (ala R-44/Rockwell) but It wouldn,t suprise me...stay tuned, the fingerpointing should commence soon! |
