To make matters more complicated, in French, engine and motor are both called "moteur" and "engin" means machinery in general.

It didn't work out because of poor ridership, not necessarily because the overhead was too expensive.

OTOH, though, you can be more flexible about the pools of available locomotives. Assuming most or all of the diesels can work with most or all of the electrics, they wouldn't have to worry about whether DM unit X should be at the head of a diesel-only run, for instance. Just allocate whatever's needed. Plus, how much would really be saved with a DM vs. 2 locomotives? Wouldn't a DM still require more work than one, though less than 2?
