PHOTOS: some Amtrak Keystone Service trains Sunday |
|
Posted by chuchubob on Mon Dec 1 09:26:57 2014 Keystone Service trains are usually five-car push-pull trains between New York and Harrisburg. The trains that I saw on Sunday all had an extra car (or two).Photos at North Philly Station Train 664 with six cars and ACS-64 #600 "David L. Gunn" pushing. Train 43 Pennsylvanian, New York to Pittsburgh, normally has six cars; it had seven on Sunday. Keystone Service train 666 had six cars. Train 665 had seven cars. |

I rode the nonstop Wash-NY Metroliner that was supposed to make the 225 miles in two-and-a-half hours. It came in 8 minutes late, so 225 miles / 158 minutes is an average speed of 85.44 mph, not too shabby. And that was when the NE Corridor was not as well-kept as today and still had a few grade crossings. I think the top speed was something like 110 mph. |

That's all correct.I don't know for sure what they had actually intended to do to the NEC to get the Budd MUs up to 160 mph, frankly, or what the intended average speed was to be. 160 mph in the 70s would have made the train (and I've said this before) the fastest in the world, without needing to build dedicated high-speed corridors as had been done in Japan. |

After Metroliner time, they were used as cab cars on the San Diegans. Ended the need to do turnarounds at both LA and San Diego ends. The turnaround at San Diego end was a pain as the train had to be pushed back to the wye at Washington St, a distance of about two miles. Limited the number of trains per day on the line. Another factor was how much of the line was single tracked (a lot back in the 80s). |

What old motors are there that can hold up?Five cars ain't little; that's a medium-sized train. And the extra acceleration would be something the pax appreciate. |

How many remanufactured motors are on the roster? Besides, I seem to recall AMTK's press department put out the impression that the AEM-7s and HHP-8s were going out of service once the ACS-64s start going into service. |

Or are the Siemens that good? And isn't there something about Amtrak wanting to rotate the Sprinters through Keystone runs because the initial acceptance testing for each car is restricted to NYP-DC and BOS-DC runs? |
