They roll once they're assembled and the rails are clear. There is no timetable. Same for CSX mainline up here. Once humped, they leave and a crew is ready to hop on and roll. |

Yea, that's something to get used to. They show up when they show up. If it's quiet enough, you can hear them coming miles away. Around here, we get maybe a 20 minute warning. |

When we had a house in Voorheesville, it was on top of a hill. Two grade crossings in town and the house was on JUST the right angle that when they blew, the horns were pointed RIGHT at the bedroom windows. It truly sucked in summer. On the main line, once the humps are full, they come by as often as the IRT until they're all out of Selkirk. Then they come the other way.CSX has a habit of running trains in one direction on both tracks, then they come the other way in pairs. |

If you come further north, they don't even bother with signals at the crossings. You're supposed to actually pay attention around here before heading across. Then again, the former D&H doesn't move very fast either. Even turtles can get out of the way in time. :)Welcome to the land of oxygen and woowoo! |

Usually through Warwick around 7-9 PM. The other days see an SU100 but that is running in the wee small hours through your area. Plus of course any CSX detours. |

If the RR where you're living is part of the former Lehigh & Hudson River RR, then you're looking at one of the remnants of the B&O's former rail route between Washington DC and Boston, via the Poughkeepsie Bridge going northbound and via the Bethlehem/Easton area southbound. |

My friend's house in Manorville backs right up to the old abandoned Manorville to Eastpprt branch ROW....and its a triple whammy. ...not only is that line abandoned.....their Manorville Station is abandoned.....and the trains that go through on the mainline are useless as there are basically none and the LIRR makes it impossible to use.....So they contribute to the artificial end of commuter zone and drive all the way to Ronkonkona...... |

I even had that when I lived along the Montauk branch in Suffolk. We were near a bunch of grade crossings and you could hear the train coming from miles away. Back before the sterile "new" trains.....you could actually tell which engine was on the train as some had distinctive horns. Once the "new" trains came....I could tell if a freight train was coming as the still used the MP15s.Once I married I moved and now live along the Mainline east of Ronkonkoma about the same distance away as I did along the south shore. Of course a lot less train action of course.....but the flip side is I do get much more freight now as I live west of the Brookhaven Rail Terminal Yard in Yaphank....so lots of freight goes through..... I like hearing the trains in the middle of the night. While not as many as the Montauk branch which had lots of scheduled passenger trains.....there are freights that go through and other moves |

Back before the sterile "new" trains.....you could actually tell which engine was on the train as some had distinctive horns.I smiled when I read this. Growing up we lived not far from the Smithtown station and in nice weather we slept with the windows open (no central A/C in those days!). I could hear the trains heading up grade towards PJ passing the lumber yard after crossing the viaduct, and recognized some of the engines by their distinctive horns as they crossed Landing Ave. heading east. Easier to do with the C420's as they received less maintenance as they got older. |

I really miss the old LIRR trains. They were truly rolling disasters for the commuters, but were a railfan's dream.I almost lost all interest in the LIRR and the subway as both have been uniformed. It's a shame. Railfans today have no idea how great either used to be. |
