Union Station was magnificent back in the day but like almost all major stations, fell into disuse and disrepair. It was rebuilt in the early 1980's as a mall but two tracks were kept for displaying special cars and equipment. Metrolink has a stop at Union Station. The shot below is from Grand Ave., one stop before Union Station:

Two different catenary support poles:

In between Grand Ave. and Union Station is the Metrolink shops:

And we pass Union Station:

Looking back just before entering St. Louis station:

A few minutes later we arrived, about 1 hour, 40 minutes late. Standing on the adjacent track was the 9:15 Missouri River Runner to Kansas City. She left on time with our passengers making the connection. Note that she used Heritage fleet equipment except for the cafe car:

St. Louis station is an intermodal station, served by Amtrak, Metrolink, and bus. Riding the escalator up I caught site of two BNSF engines, with GP75M #221 still in Sante Fe warbonnet livery trailed by SD70ACe #8798:

I boarded a Metrolink train at St. Louis station and rode it out to Lambert Airport, where I rented a car:

I hope you enjoyed the trip report!

Note that she used Heritage fleet equipment except for the cafe car:

Those look like Horizons, which aren't Heritage equipment, but a Comet II based train that supposedly rides worse than a regular Comet...

St. Louis' Union Station was built as a terminal rather than a through station, even though there were through tracks that bypassed it but with no platforms. Not too practical when you end up having to do a reverse move on a through train.

There were only a few through trains, mostly Wabash, IIRC.

The sheer size of that station speaks to what the city once was.

Yes, most of Amtrak's Horizon fleet is in the Midwest. Other than having a bad reputation for freeze up in very cold weather, they are not bad cars.

Very true. In 1900 it was the 5th largest city (in terms of population) in the U.S.
