NY Central varnish in Teaneck NJ |
|
Posted by Olog-hai on Sat Apr 25 03:07:29 2009 Dunno where this Bob Krone feller gets his pix, but I'm hooked (for now).Looky dis. RS3 running long-hood forward, hauling West Shore train #3 from Weehawken to Albany. (NYC had two "Empire Corridors" back then, in essence. Dated March 1956. Yes, that's a four-track main.) |

That would be the Erie RR's Northern Branch, which runs parallel through Tenafly. That line was two-track, and ran onto the Piermont Branch in Sparkill NY.These pix are of the current CSX "River Subdivision"; note the NY Central operating. And frankly, NJT's current spur to the Meadowlands was supposed to be connected to the River Sub so that West Shore commuter trains could run again (the intent being to run them through Secaucus, for the transfer; but of course we now have the upcoming magical ALP-45DP "dual-power" thingies, so who knows if this might be resurrected, if they actually work that is). |

In the distance is the concrete overpass of Route 4 .I drove over daily from 1970-1976 going to school.By then, it was only 2 tracks and it was Penn Central. There were long freights every day going each way.Another area they ripped out two tracks was the old Erie running through Mahwah NJ.Used to be four tracks there also. |

The early diesels emulated steam engines, with the long hood in front. Crews thought of it as being much safer, as well. Took me a long time before I thought of the rear hood in front as being normal. Lee |

Teaneck is on the West Shore. Terminal for the Northern Branch project is planned to be Tenafly, on the Northern Branch. Too bad it doesn't go all the way to Nyack, as it should.Lee |

I always remember the RS3's on the Brewster-NWP portion of the Harlem and how they belched a plume of black smoke when they pulled out of a station. |
