derailed F train this morning |
|
Posted by JFK Depot on Fri May 2 11:25:11 2014 Brooklyn-bound subway train derailed in Queens Friday morning, according to MTA. The agency described it as a derailment about 10:30 a.m. Friday on its website. A spokesperson told PIX11 the agency was responding to an “incident” involving an express F train near the Broadway-65th Street station. Emergency crews are on the scene. There was no immediate report of injuries, though hundreds of passengers are estimated to be on the train. Passengers are being evacuated through chute-like emergency exits, access through the sidewalk above, between 60th and 65th streets, aerial footage showed. Because of the derailment, the following service changes are in effect, according to MTA: Northbound 7 trains are terminating at 57th Street/Seventh Avenue Some northbound R trains are running on the N line from 57th Street/Seventh Avenue to Queensboro Plaza E, F, and M trains are running with delays in both directions |

Judging from where evacuees are emerging, I'd guess it was either a rail condition on D3 track, or a problem on one or more of the cars. I doubt it has anything to do with the curve. If it were, people would have been evacuated closer to the Northern Boulevard station.I don't recall any work having been done on the tracks that would require significant speed reduction. I last rode that section of the system on Monday, and I didn't notice anything unusual. Trains usually zip through that area anyway. The fastest train I've taken through there hit the curve at about 46 mph, though most usually don't go past 42. |

Posted by R46 5636 on Fri May 2 15:06:40 2014, in response to derailed F train this morning, posted by JFK Depot on Fri May 2 11:25:11 2014. You read that correctly. I was on the train that derailed. Here's what happened:10:19 AM SB (F) train leaves Roosevelt Avenue 10:20 AM Right after 65 Street on the fastest part, train goes BIE. Lights flicker and track keeps making banging noises (stop arm keeps reacting). 10:21 AM Smoke in tunnel 10:24 AM T/O and C/R are on Intercom, call for Handbrake. While I was overhearing the conversation, they were saying how the train may be pulled apart (it wasn't). C/R goes on intercom and tells passengers to remain calm (Yeah right!) 10:32 AM C/R announces that there will be a rescue train coming 10:36 AM T/O comes into car and announces that the train has derailed and we'll be stuck here for a while. 10:39 AM Fire Department arrives. I stopped taking notes after that, but here's what I remember: > Two passengers complained of trouble breathing and were sat down and given oxygen > They were first going to send the rescue train behind my train. Then they decided they were going to send it on the NB Express track... Except there was a wall blocking it. > Eventually they decided to use the emergency exit, of which they did. > I was one of the first ones to climb down onto the roadbed and use the emergency exit. Lots of Emergency Services and News media were there. This was the set involved: N 5742-5743-5745-5744=5634-5635-5637-5636 S (Of course 5636 was involved) I overheard that the first two cars may have damage, which were 5743 and 5745. It took an hour to get out of the train. When the train went BIE, it was something like out of a horror movie: The train stops dead silent and the lights keep flickering / tracks making noises. Then the smoke appears. Of course, I didn't have my camera on me (that's my luck). I did take one picture from inside the train. Almost everyone was taking video with their smartphones, but they were told to put them away when evacuating. If anyone says something different happened, tell them to come to me since I was there firsthand! It really was an interesting experience. |

I was going along being my usual railfan self until BIE hit. Posted by Gold_12th on Fri May 2 15:48:28 2014, in response to derailed F train this morning, posted by JFK Depot on Fri May 2 11:25:11 2014. A Manhattan-bound F train carrying about 1,000 customers derailed shortly after 10:15 a.m. on Friday, May 2, suspending service along the Queens Boulevard corridor. The incident occurred about 1,200 feet west of the 65th Street Station and the cause is currently under investigation.Aided by New York Fire and Police Department personnel, customers were evacuated from the incident train to the street via an emergency exit at 60th Street. A second express train in the area was moved back to Queens Plaza where about 100 passengers were discharged with no injuries reported. The evacuations were completed in about two hours. The derailment forced six cars of the eight car train off the rails, though all cars remained upright and stable. Nineteen customers suffered minor injuries, 15 of which were deemed to be minor. “The focus originally was on caring for the injured and the safe evacuation of our customers. The Fire and Police Departments did an excellent job in this effort.” said MTA Chairman and CEO Thomas Prendergast, who responded to the scene with NYC Transit President Carmen Bianco. “The focus is now on a full and thorough investigation of this incident. After the rush hour we will focus on re-railing the cars, inspecting and repairing damage and then restoring service when everything has been determined to be safe.” Train service along the Queens Boulevard Line was expected to be restored first on the two outer local tracks with re-railing and removal of the damaged train to begin sometime after rush hour. Though NYC Transit is working to restore service, with only two tracks there will be limited capacity along one of the City’s busiest corridors. http://www.mta.info/news/2014/05/02/teamwork-helps-ensure-safe-evacuation-hundreds-riders |

According to the reports I heard, there were 1,000 or so on the derailed train. I would assume that an equal number were on the E train that ended up in the power off area. Reports of that type early on are notoriously unreliable anyway. I did here Tom Prendergast call this a "minor derailment". Things must have gotten much worse in the last 3 years because 6 cars on the ground would never have been called a minor incident back then. |
