This tells me that the MTA or Metro North does not have any confidence to give the job to anyone within its own ranks.Apparently his error in judgement with the handeling of NJT equiptment during hurricane Sandy was not that big of a hit on his resume & still maintained his front running status for the appointment. Thats a huge slap in the face for anyone trying to move up in the ranks who deep in their heart know the railroad better than any outsider & deserve the promotion. Just another example of politics & cronyism overtaking basic transportation smarts. Simply put,what the hell happened to Metro-North?? How the mighty have fallen from grace. |

The other example was Don Nelson. If memory serves, he was VP under Stengl & when he left, Don got the job. THat didn't used to be the case. Historically, railroads appointed only from within unlike advertising agencies which traditionally raided each other for management positions. That's probably why the quality of all the MTA agencies has suffered in recent years and is also a statement on the inability of the MTA's agencies to properly train its own personnel for upper level jobs. I read an article in the NY Times a few years ago that indicated that it was poor administrative style to import management from outside the agency or corporation since it sends the message that the only way to move up is to move out. Additionally, when it comes to the NYCTS, what does a manager from a small transit system like Boston or Philly that has separate transit lines that never intersect know about handling a place like DeKalb Av or W4 St where numbers of lines converge and diverge? Probably the closest transit system in complexity to NY is Chicago and even as complicated as the loop interlockings at Tower 12 and Tower 18 are, they don't compare to places like Nostrand Jct or Dekalb. When it comes to transit systems in the US and possibly even the world there are 2 categories: NYCTS and "others!" |

In addition to that, on a continual basis:- Abominable attitude about off peak fares and off peak service -Condescending and hostile attitude to advocacy groups at NJT Board meetings - Sloppy operations with levels of Shirley time added to the schedules rendering OTP a joke - Satisfied with Customer Service scores of 65%, which is school is a D - Fucks up Superbowl while accepting NFL's ridiculous ridership predictions - Insisted on using ALP45DP's on 10 car MLV Super Bowl train that could not keep a schedule while prviding HEP (they can't provide adequate HEP in D mode on MLV trains over 8 cars). - Insisted on using MLV cars on Super Bowl train, being too stupid to decipher per car capacity from ingress/egress and throughput in general. Next Hurricane, he'll probably stuff Harmon Yard with equipment while it floods. Have fun with him. |

That reminds me of a schedule manager I worked with. He took a "temporary" job with the B of T in 1952 and retired circa 1992. At his retirement party, he was asked how long he was going to stay on his permanent job now that he was leaving his temporary one. |
