Obviously, it was tiled as Gold St. Does anyone here have any personal memory of whether this tilework was easily visible in the 1950s?If not, did they just cover it with sings, or actually re-tile it? Also, obviously, the station lights hadn't been turned on yet, and they didn't have powerful floodlights to illuminate the shot, but I still congratulate the photographer, whoever he was, for getting the shot done with the technology he had available back then... |

Which, I guess, is why the NYCTA sacrificed it as part of the De Kalb reconstruction. If it was a vital station, I'm sure they'd have found a way to save and/or reposition it... |

At the S/E corner of Park Ave. South and East 18th Street, the foundations of the old IRT kiosk are still easily visible in the sidewalk- and were even more so 10 years ago. Also, the emergency escape hatch is located right there. |

I noticed that but very often reporters get to see certain locations before they are open to the public and the station name may have been changed between the time the reporters got the info and the time the station actually opened. I wonder of there are any photos of the station actually open and in service under the name "Gold St." |

If the proposed new station on the Myrtle Av el at Flatbush Ext had been built with a transfer to the subway at that station it likely would have remained open and the Dekalb Av realignment accomplished somewhat differently. |

With all the underground tunnel work and the consequent electrical wiring, there is probably no space for even an underground connector. Besides you can't always have subway stations on top of every office building in an area. Some of us will have to walk a few blocks even in the rain and snow to get from the subway to our offices or homes. |

Hi,I believe that the loop track that has been mentioned was supposed to exist and connect about the position marked as A282. I understand that there were supposed to be two side tracks that would form a loop track UNDER the Manhattan Bridge. As I understand it, this loop track was never built. Mike |

I have no idea, but it was characteristic of all the IRT express stations on the original subway except for 96 St and Bkln Br. Even the Grand Central shuttle station when it was a through station on the original mainline had the same configuration. |

I don't know where the loop could have been since I passed through that area many times as a M/M on very BMT line that ran there and I saw bellmouths on both sides but absolutely no evidence of a loop crossing at grade. It would also have made no sense for the BRT or the BMT to install a short turn loop that would have passed at grade considering all the through train traffic passing through the area. FYI evan as late as the late 1930s when the handwriting was on the wall for city takeover, the BMT had plans for completing the loop and operating a special 4 Av lcl service between 95 St and Gold St using the Bluebirds since at the time it was anticipated that all 50 units originally scheduled for manufacture would be built. |

They do make for a convenient place to lay up a train that breaks down in rush hour. Get it temporarily out of the way, so a deadhead run doesn't foul peak hour service...Then, say, at 10:30 AM get it to a yard. |

I thought that the Bluebirds were built as additional subway/el cars, to supplement the Multis. Why dump 4th Ave riders at DeKalb, when there was underutilized Nassau Loop service on the other side of the MannyB? |

I really can't say, but I remember reading an article somewhere indicating that was the plan. Actually, as part of the plan if the 50 Bluebirds were insufficient for the level of service anticipated to be operated, Multis would have been used to complete the service requirements. The BMT's idea was to use cars with the higher acceleration and deceleration of the Bluebirds and Multis to give the passengers a fast a ride to downtown Bkln as the older express trains could do. Remember, even back then there was sufficient employment in downtown Bkln to warrant such a service. |
