Cab car did not have an alerter

Just saw this over at the Times. Apparently there was no alerter in the cab car of the ill-fated train, but was in the locomotive on the "north" end.

Train Had a Warning System, Just Not in the Operator's Cab

Excerpt:

The Metro-North Railroad train that derailed on Sunday included a system designed to warn an operator of a potential accident. But such an "alerter," which can automatically apply the brakes if an operator is unresponsive, was not in the cab where William Rockefeller apparently fell into an early-morning daze at the controls. It was at the other end of the train ...

It was equipped with an older style deadman's pedal.

Yep ... saw that. Figured I'd pass this one along since I didn't see any mention of it prior. That'd possibly be a faster option for a temporary solution though for now I suspect. I was kinda surprised that they didn't have them in the cab cars already.

I'm wondering if that would be a viable solution. Seems something that could be done a lot faster than rewiring the outside.

I remember alerters being new in the early '60s, by 1969 Great Northern had had a two fatality collision at Marysville WA where the alerter failed to save the day (people trouble with it).

Yep ... I've been in cabs where the engineer was too busy trying to get his radio working to play bounce the handles and that damned thing gets REALLY annoying. But I thought I'd offer it here since they're pretty cheap compared to ATS if you're going to nod off. They *do* get your attention.

In that GN case it was cutout and nod off was exactly what the crew did.

I'm sure somebody went to hell for that. Anyone who tried that on Gonerail was gone for tampering.

It was a local jury that decided the engineer had cut out the alertor. He was at retirement age. A site called GNarchive.com has the accident report.

How big a project would it be to set up a permanent cab signal "drop" in the area, as I think it is called, so that engineers entering that curve never get a signal indication more permissive than "medium", thereby enforcing the 30 mph limit? I don't know for sure, but I suspect that could be implemented pretty cheaply and pretty quickly.

It is exactly what Amtrak did for the Elizabeth curve, which had a near catastrophe about 15- - 18 years ago.

I read that article, and it was excellent. They actually got the technical stuff pretty much right, which is a rarity in the media today.
