Jersey Mike and I went to SEPTA's Bristol station to photograph a couple Amtrak Northeast Regional Extra (Amtrak equipment, not the Holiday Extra trains with leased commuter equipment on Sunday) trains in the rain. Alas, downed trees and catenary east of New York foiled the plan, so here are some of the trains that we saw.

train 86 (Richmond to Boston)

Keystone Service train 644

train 98 Silver Meteor (Miami to New York) with an extra baggage car on the rear

train 43 Pennsylvanian with seven cars instead of the usual six (New York to Pittsburgh)

Keystone Service train 664, usually Sat/Sun only

Probably the lat Thanksgiving there will be any HHP's around. They go before the worn out AEM7(DC) do.
From what I hear, the ACS tests are going excellently.

Yes Joe, I think the Hippos will be joining the E60's on memory lane in the not to distant future.

Nice pics. Never heard anyone at work call them armadillos. They are bananas to any at amtrak. In fact in many cabs they are nicknamed with a name rhyming with banana like Anna banana. Lol. When the acs64s start coming online, the HHPS and aem7ac will be parked and the dc motors will be scrapped. The dc motors are already paid for and therefore can be scrapped. The remans will be part of a reserve fleet. Once the HHPS are pulled from service, that will be it for them. They cost amtrak a lot of money to run and in manpower hours because of there stays in the shop. It will actually be cheaper for amtrak to just park them and continue laying the mortgage on them instead of running them in service. Just an FYI, one of the first remans to get yanked from service will be the 918 because she's due to enter the shop in February to have its air brake system redone which happens every 3 years and apparently this cost a lot of money, so she will be the first to go on the remans.

Man, every piece of equipment has some name to it!!! :-D

First I ever heard of Armadillos or Bananas. Bananas are the name given to out 2-engine fleet of yellow Brokeville, oops Brookville, BL14CG Co-Generation Gen-Set engines here on MNR.

I always heard the name Hippo given to the HHP-8s, Hippo derived from the HHP designation.
