I don't know the details of the substation involved, but at least some circuit breakers are arranged to reclose a few times before staying off, to guard against being thrown by transient overloads. That *might* be the source of the story. |

Yep ... but the desire not to cross trains across the Brighton line came much later. :)Would you want some dinky shuttle of R27s back in the 1970s and 1980s crapping out and blocking Brighton service because of some dead motors? |

We had arnines on the mainline doing that anyway. :)To this day, I'm mesmerized by the Boomer desire to relive the 1970s in subways when the equipment was junk and the track was in even worse state. Hell, I'm still in doubt of Arnine speeds given how many of the motors would have been dead in the first place. Of course, I was spoiled by the luxury of the R-46s and the fact that I've been on a BVG's network in Berlin which destroys NYCTA for ride quality and acceleration, and a decent bit of their network is stone age too... |

Only reason why I love my arnines so much is that they were great to operate. They kept your hands busy. :)Dunno if I'd want to ride them either, but they were a lot of fun to move and often a challenge to KEEP them moving. If I were thinking about what would be a nice ride, I'd probably prefer Amcans. But they don't fit. (grin) |

Yeah, but as long as the boomers are fantasizing how about....With four, count them, four motors each. Eleven of them, powered by 44 motors, hauling ass down or up Central Park west! |

Most of those who want to relive the glory days of the NYCTS are not necessarily referring to the bad old days of the 1970s, but rather the better old days of the 1950s and possibly the very early 1960s when the classic equipment was in relatively decent shape and free of vandalism. |
