R16 to be repainted?

Saw this on a passing F train.

Looks like the workers are putting on either white paint or primer onto the R16. They also moved the R42-R40M pair next to the R16 and put a single R46 a car in it's place.

Could be possible. If it is, it's about time those R16s get some much needed TLC. Thanks for posting.

Who owns this R16 ?

Is that a BMT Standard in back of the yellow thing ?

Yes, that's the BMT Standard in primer paint. The yellow thing is a vacuum train.

I find it curious the R16, which I remember over 30 years ago as out of service at 36th St. Yard full of lockers, isn't being painted inside the barn.

The RPC owns 6305 and 6339, which are at CIY.

Nice picture!

From the looks of it, they seem to be painting 6305 to a silver-like color she once used to wear over a decade ago:

Country: United States
City: New York
System: New York City Transit
Location: Coney Island Yard-Museum Yard
Car: R-16 (American Car & Foundry, 1955) 6305
Date: 5/22/1999

I do like how they moved the R40M/42 combo to where the R30 School Cars were. I do wonder now if the pair are preserved - not in terms of museum cars, but as in owned by the RPC?

Also a side question - was the R46 car an A-unit or a B-unit? Have they set cars that are in for repairs out there, I wonder...I've only seen museum cars or old cars ready for the scrapper at that location.

When we had 6398 stored in CIY before TMNY accepted us, we painted it in that lime green on 9 track with wooden ladders. We had the balls to do shoe beams before a few waves were made and we got kicked to 207 Yard where a more friendly shop Supt allowed us into the main shop for a couple of weekends on our own time do do our brake rigging, compressor motor, M.G. swap and traction brushes. Volunteers are just that, even if we worked for TA. They are lucky when they get shop space, especially now they do full time SMS. There are those two R30s from CIY waiting for scrap on the dock track. I heard they and that R27 are NOT getting shop time to get stripped of their 2CYs and M.G.s. Very sad the shops aren't as friendly as they used to be

So they're sending off the R27 after all? Kind of unfortunate, especially since it'll be going off with parts that could go on other preserved cars, like that 2CY compressor. Oh well...

Did they ever repair that R46 that was flooded from Sandy at 207th?

Would be nice if they saved that R42/40m pair. Pity it was flooded by Sandy last year. Is the museum saving an R40m pair or is it just the R40s representing them both?

They have some R40A straight-end car pair (4480-4481) at Concourse.

They do this while so many older units need attention. World's Fair car, Trplexes and so on. Dream on.

It would actually be nice if a combo R-40M/42 pair were to be displayed so the difference between the two types would be easily seen by museum goers.

Agreed. Plus the history of the willy b crash makes them significant. I'd save 1438 for the R62 for a similar reason as it was one of the cars of the infamous union sq train crash. Now whether they'd want to keep 3 R42s is another story.
