Let me recall something that was brought up on the 1970s...10 x 60' cars = 40 doors open at the platform 8 x 75' cars = 32 doors open at the platform resulting in longer dwell times at the station. I know 75' cars mean fewer units to order, but still...plus, is it true that 75-footers cannot run on certain lines at all? |

Yup, and they already have plenty of cars for this theoretical usage which will never happen. If the motivation of getting rid of the final R42s wasn't enough, it will not happen during the R211's lifetime. Now it's time to stop wasting money and go back to ordering cars efficiently. |

Also means that will likely be the SIR car as well, though probably not link-barred.In the meantime, I suspect the last 40 R179's would displace 32 R46's to SI should the R44's get difficult and won't last until the R211. At least they wouldn't have to run the residual R44's non-rush. |

Well yes, but then what do you do with the middle car ?Make an equal number of 6 car sets and run on the G ? They'd have to blow OPTO. I wonder what it would take to retrofit the "L" line for 9 car trains ? |

Wonder if they'll remember to order 4 2-car sets (AA) for the Franklin Shuttle to replace 2916-2924 (the 9th car doesn't need to be replaced and is a testament to MTA's stupidity in ordering an odd number of Hippos in the first place (IMO)). |

True, they were singles at first, but then when they decided to make them into 4-car pairs, there was the odd car out (now of course the Frankie is basically made up of 2 singles (with the full-length cab facing out on each), yet there's still the odd car sitting around. It is what it is.) |

They could've rebuilt the FS to be 3 car 75' trains. That would have left 216 left over, assuming 2 trains and a spare, which is an exact multiple of 4.Then they would have had the flexibility to use 4 car sets from ENY if they wanted to with 15' more |

It probably wouldn't take much if anything to retrofit the L for 9 car trains since a 9 car train of 60 footers is only 4 ft longer than an 8 car train of 67 footers and given the door placement, 9 car trains of 60 footers would probably fit in most if not all Eastern Div stations with the exception of Met. |

The Standards had some overhang, and there is the possibility of paraphernalia placed on the platforms, just like the IND can't handle 11 car trains anymore.Looking at the Jamaica Av stations, they never centered 8 cars SMEE's in the stations. About half the 1st car overshoots the stairs while the rear car is about a half-car clear of the rear stairs. |

Makes sense since it's to replace the R46s. Not like they need more 60' car trains in sets of 5. As long as it has 10 doors per car over the 8 on the current 75' cars, then that's better. |

I wonder if they with with slightly recessed single leaf doors (like the newer commuter rail ones), would it be confusing enough to discourage door holding? I can't imagine anyone getting a good grip on them...Barring that, an extremely loud directed alarm at the door area when the door is held would be nice. It would also have the benefit of "encouraging" passengers to help along a slow door or door blocked by a physical object such as a battery. |

But at least if you have a full 300' platform, you can always send another set up the line than to be limited to just the 2-car sets they have now. The Rock park S seems to do fine with their set up of 4 car trains. |

Wide doors aren't going to do much if people are still crowding by the doors and not moving in the center. May as well just have the 10 doors at the current width. |
