The Classics of Summer - Photos of the Living ,the Preserved, and the Dead |
|
Posted by Mysterious Friday 1986 on Tue Sep 24 21:45:48 2013 One of the best things about my job is that I travel just about anywhere - whether by rail, bus, or by automobile - from one place to another each day. Last month, this was definitely the case. The pictures I present to you tonight were taken between August 4th and August 20th. Some might've been seen elsewhere. Many were just taken on the fly, so pardon the quality. But as I've said, things like these are worth sharing. Enjoy. R28 7925 ![]() Redbirds of Unionport (now of Concourse) Yard R28 7924-25, R29 8678-79. R26 7774-75, R36WF 9586-87 ![]() Wait, it starts to get interesting. R110Bs ![]() R12 5782 ![]() R14 5871. I really need to invest on a good camera. ![]() But it get's even better. ![]() In this picture: R40 4280-81, R95 Revenue Collection Cars 0R714-1R714 (Ex R21 7194 and R22 7422, respectively), R33WF 9307-9308, R36WF 9400-01, R32 #3370-71, R156 Locomotives, R33ML 9068-69 in the distance. During that time, I spied R42 4572-73 are inside the shop building on the track where the R40s are. ![]() And even better yet... ![]() And when it comes to The Living and the Preserved, there's also The Dead. R22 7486 - merely a shell of itself now... ![]() R17 6895 and R21 7267 ![]() And finally, soldiers who continue to march on. ![]() R36WF 9582-83, and R33ML Rail Adhesion Car 8885, R36WF 9584-85, R33WF 9325, 9322, 9309, 9323. Thank you for viewing. |

Good job. You really did your homework!I see you got 9400 and 01 in there. Was expecting to see 9582 and 83 depart Unionport and take the trip to the great unknown, but as of yet nothing has transpired. 9584-85 haven't been uncoupled from the RAT, so perhaps it has a reprieve! We'll see in a few weeks when 8885 hits the road. Did you see this? |

Only a matter of time. Thanks for the video by the way, first time seeing that one. There was more than one person filming that same train that night. |

When that pair gets restored, I would anticipate the cars to be painted in the dark Olive Green scheme. with 7924, perhaps drop sash windows from donor R30 school cars could work on that car if possible. |

Oh yeah, there are plenty of Redbirds still around. 7774-75 are the sole remaining R26 in existence. 8678-79 the only R29s. And 7924-25 the only R28s on property (another pair, 7926-27 at the Illinois Railway Museum currently undergoing restoration, one car a a time). |

The 3rd locomotive there at the end was for the extra oomph moving the Redbirds to Concourse. Four Redbirds not moving under their own power, so the work cars did the moving for them. |

The R12/14 cars look very much intact. Just a matter of putting parts back together, a cleaning, and a painting. Possibliy replacement wiring as well among lots of other things. Would look goot for a static display. Mechanical-wise could be another story. |

That pair also made a brief appearance in the 2009 remake of Pelham 123. And there's of course 9400-01, where there's a push by a few groups to keep it from scrap and to restore it. |

Yeah, but it will be a long term thing just like R10 3189 and the two R16s at CIY. I can't forget about the Standards too, which had some work done to them. Only a few other preserved SMEEs besides the TOMC cars could potentially run in the near future. |

Well at least some are taking interest in that particular pair. Very unfortunate that type of interest wasn't around in 1950 or during the 1940s. If that was the case we would of had the first train that ran in subway preserved as well as 3342, the first steel passenger car ever built. |

I think of the Arnines when it comes to that question: most of the cars sat out in the elements for years. It's taken quite a while, but slowly each car on property is being restored. With these Redbirds, I think it could be done. |

Well it's rare for a transit system to save almost every car built, but we can try. You also have to keep in mind, the 26s and 28s originally had H2C couplers. Same with the R27s and R30s. The same could be done to these pairs again. Thankfully all R10-42s can run in the same train as each other. |

What cars are back there does change from time to time. Someone can also chime in on this...I know both R10 cars (3184 and 3189) are in there, as well as the R36ML cars 9542-43. Not sure if R32 3352-53 are inside as well. |
