Trains      Museum in St. Petersburg  According to them this is fastest diesel locomotive.  Lend Lease    Subways Moscow First train to start the day. Seeing the subway trains with the fancy chandeliers and the marble hallways right there at the platforms just seems incongruous somehow. Visually impressive, to be sure, but it would feel weird being there somehow. |

For a railfan if feels great when you are there, as the subways are being given the royal treatment that we all feel they deserve.When you learn the history of why they are that way (essentially the Soviet government feeling that public spaces should be grand while their citizens lived in very poor conditions, you feel a bit less good about it. But it is absolutely spectacular to see. Highly recommended for any railfan to visit Moscow and explore the subway. They even have daylong tours that will let you explore the details of each unique station. |
