( My hunch is the best they can do is have limited westbound (GCT bound) service for the AM rush because nothing will be able to go back east. )OK now, isn't to GCT east, and from it west for the Hudson/Harlem line ? |

Picky, picky, picky...........whatever it is.You should figure out my point: which is if only 1 track is available, naturally you need it in the peak passenger direction. |

Hudson Line trains generally only use a single track (the west-most track) for both outbound and inbound service between 138th St and 59th St as well.So if there are switches in reasonable places (no idea if there are) they could manage limited outbound service in the morning rush. Anyway, they have to get the locomotives back to PGH or else they won't have any late morning service. |

Hudson line and Harlem line are North/SouthEven when the Lake Shore Limited is running over the Hudson Line? :) A good reason to use generally accepted terminology instead of railroad terminology in some cases. |

Politicians always disregard "what a budget is and the budgetary process". In their lust to take over the railroads, we've ended up with fewer railroads than ever. |

So you pulling a Jersey Mike on us and implying that we need to go back to jointed rail to allay fears of "rail spread" due to metal expansion . . . ?Amtrak runs at restricted speed during the hot weather on the NEC not due to the rails, but due to the variable-tension overhead wires. |

Years ago when MN bought the Beacon line, they could have re-habbed it & had it ready for just such emergencys & ran southbound Bomb trains from Poughkeepsie to CP Dyke & then down the Harlem line to GCT & give Dutchess Co patrons a one seat ride & a sense that they were getting the most bang for their buck.Just a pipe dream. When Don Nelson insisted on buying the Beacon Line in the first place to fulfill a future need for Dutchess Co service to White Plains, it was pie in the sky optomism. From CP 58 to CP Dyke is junk filled & washed out in many places. There was potential there for improved upper hudson traffic but the realistic future holds that the line is just another rail trail to come |

Is there a worse place that could have happened - as far clearances for the repair equipment is concerned? The river on one side, the rock facing on the other...and on a curve. |

And a very popular spot, known as "the cut" for diving into the Harlem river. Good thing nobody was hanging out there when it went on the ground. |

Judging from the second to the last photo, they've already laid down the wood ties with new rail, just have to put the third rail down and maybe some wiring. Thanks for posting the pics! |
