It runs, the AC works, I get from point A to point B with reasonable certainty, enviornment fairly clean, the seats don't break my back...etc.You get what you pay for. Basic transportation, comfort & safety. The equiptment age issue will surface when one of them craps out. The first things that'll be mentioned is,"aha!! see what happenes when you run old trains. That mindset helped get the R 1-9s off the EE all those years ago |

Well..they were using Jamaica beat to death R 1's-R 4..not to mention they were going through a sever cars shortage problem due to the very same reasons.the last draw was the one of the breaking down in the 60th st tunnel..causing such a massive delay during the rush hour. |

R160s, they may keep the air circulating, but you don't really feel the cool air as much as you do on the R32s. otoh, if the ac goes out on the r32, it can feel like an oven. |

Oldest vs. newest isn't that important to most passengers, as long as everything works. If the old cars are hot (as they would be on the C) or dark, or have doors that don't work, people will get POed. Otherwise, it should be no big deal to the average non-railfan person. |

Well, once you can't open the windows (or not much of the windows) on a subway car or bus, you become entirely dependent on the AC to keep things cool. If the A/C is kaput, you have a serious sweatbox. Then add a homeless person into the mix... |

I was told that it, was an R-16 that broke down & a trainload of rush hr passengers were in an R-1-9 right behind. The pre war equiptment had malfunctioning fans on half of its cars & many passengers were overcome by the heat. With that, orders came down from on high to get those R 1/9s off the Broadway line. Anyone else hear that story?? |

Moving them outside in the summer seems reasonable enough. What I don't get is why they move them back in the fall. Isn't the biannual game of musical chairs an expensive hassle? Or is there some reason they need to spend the winter in a nice, warm tunnel? |

East NY can handle the repairs and inspections of the NTTs because they have the gauges, tools, maunals and parts to do it properly. Pitkin Shop or 207th St Shop cannot for the reasons stated. Since the NTT were bases at Pitkin during testing phase. many of the car inspectors and supervisors learned about the R-160s. There are also gauges on the property but there are virtually no parts at Pitkin to make needed repairs. |
