This reminds me of the LIRR Forest Hills derailment where they were very lucky there was no side-swipe. If a track defect, are these obese M-7 and M-8 trains breaking rails faster than we can detect them ? |

M7 been running service for like 10 years before that Forest Hills derailment, I don't think the trains themselves are the problem.I lurk the NJT forum on RR.net and they say the MLV there wear out the tracks but we don't hear stories about them derailing while in operation. |

So sounds like the original report was correct but incomplete. I'm still impressed with how good the survival rate was given the extent of the damage. However, if it had happened on the OTHER side of that lead car, not so good. Sure hope there's room there to bail properly given that at least the aisles didn't seem to get cut up. |

MLV's most definitely have derailment issues, but not due to weight, but overly stiff draw-bar on curves, like in train yards.Talking to MofW fellow on a PATH train, whose says PA-5's have caused an epidemic in broken rails of PATH's trolley car track from when they were around just 6 months. |

It might be that with CEM the one car would have deformed and never have intruded into the passenger cabin of the other car without causing damage to its own passenger space. The possibility also exists that with another, better design the train cars would have remained upright and on their own tracks, avoiding the collision in the first place. |

Well once again, I caution (like I did in my reply, "(without any real details yet)") that "instant news" doesn't provide very complete information which is why it's best to wait until it's fully cooked. That said, based on what it appeared like given, as bad a wreck as this was, certainly still looks better than ones involving older car designs. |
