"Rockaway A Train Restoration

We are making progress in our efforts to repair damage caused by Hurricane Sandy and restore A train service to the Rockaway peninsula and Broad Channel.

Hundreds of thousands of feet of cable are being replaced. The scope and magnitude of work is daunting.

MTA says A train service will be back on track to and from the Rockaways by June.

Transit workers are laboring to replace the switches, signals and track supports washed out by Hurricane Sandy in October.

"If you drop chinaware or glass, you try to put the pieces back, just like a puzzle," said Kai Chan, a MTA engineer.

The agency says it can't pinpoint an exact date when the peninsula's vital transit link will be restored.

It's a complicated job. Hurricane Sandy devastated four miles of track, forcing Rockaways residents onto buses connecting them to the A Train at Howard Beach and leaving behind an enormous repair job that's still going on nearly five months later.

The storm flooded stations, wiped out vital electrical equipment and turned train tracks into dumping grounds.

"There were boats on this station, a bunch of debris from the ocean, some docks," said Raymond Wong, a New York City Transit infrastructure manager. "A fuel tank was on the platform. A jet ski was on the platform."

The Rockaways repair work takes up a big chunk of the $5 billion being spent to repair damage inflicted by Hurricane Sandy on the city's transit system.

When it's finally done, MTA officials say portions of the track will be shielded by a new steel wall and antiquated equipment will be replaced.

"Bit by bit, we're making progress, and again, we're really hopeful that we'll be able to restore service to and from the Rockaways some time in June," said Kevin Ortiz, a MTA spokesperson.

For people in the Rockaways, June 1 would sound a lot better than June 30. Until then, the sight of an A train rumbling on the tracks remains a memory to Rockaways locals.

Ummm...if the North Channel Bridge was completely submerged, then isn't a wall only 7 feet high kind of useless?

Perfectly useful. The point is not to stop water from getting on the tracks, but to keep the tracks from washing away.

The weak point for the steel walls will be where they emerge from the ground. Salt water will erode unless they are painted on a regular basis. Until then they will make a nice canvas for eurotrash grafittos.

How far are these walls to extend? Will the wall be the entire length of the "Flats"?

Its the entire length, they want to prevent washout tracks as much as possible.

For anyone worried about the view, consider this:

The floor of a typical subway car is about 3 feet, 10 inches above the top of the rails. Let's round that to 4 feet above the ground when considering car floor height plus rail height.

That means your eyes would need to be about 3 feet above the car floor for your view to be obscured. Above that, and you can see over the top of that wall.

Thanks that makes sense.
There is a marina in Islip township, located in West Saville. It has similar piles, but I think they are made of a coated aluminum.

The water damage must have been that bad for them to only be repairing the Rockaway Park branch (past 90th Street) now. I knew it was bad, but the fact it took them until late winter-early spring to fix that part of it just shows how much damage that part of the line really got.
