Love that trainshed at Davis Street! It's no coincidence that one of the partners in the architectural firm that designed this historically-evocative structure was a prominent rail historian, the late Arthur D. Dubin.

Nice collection.

The North Shore Line switched between third rail and overhead wires at Howard.

That's basically incorrect. The wires that you see in this 1963 picture of Howard St. are for two services. The wire on the track on the far right (track one) is for the CTA freight operation. That wire extends south of Howard St. over track 1 all the way to the ground level exchange track south of Montrose Ave. Tracks 2,3,4 did not have wire south of Howard St. The wires on the other tracks in this 1963 picture are for service to the CTA Evanston branch. Prior to 1955, the North Shore went north from Howard on two branches, the CTA Evanston branch and the Skokie branch. But the Skokie Branch was third rail from Howard to past the Skokie Shops. So NB North Shore trains going to the Evanston would change to trolley, SB's would change from trolleys. Then in 1955 the North Shore suspended its Shore Line operation over the Evanston branch. So although CTA Evanston/Wilmette 'L' trains changed from trolley wire to third rail, all North Shore trains now only went via the Skokie Route, they never used trolley wire through Howard. Note in your picture the NB Electroliner is running on third rail power. It will remain on third rail and go out the Skokie route and will never switch to poles until it is past the CTA Skokie Shops, roughly two miles away.

Now SB North Shore trains from both branches could use track one and run under wire. Before 1955, Shore line trains would keep their poles up through Howard. Skokie North Shore trains coming off the Skokie branch on third rail could put poles up and use track one. Track one has third rail south of Granville interlocking. North Shores and 'L' trains could go south on track two and be switched to track one and operate third rail all the way.

Complicated, yes, but you can't say all North Shore trains changed trolley to third rail at Howard.

Did the North Shore change over at the same location that the Skokie Swift used to, between East Prairie and Crawford Aves.?

will never forget watching a North Shore trainman "throwing" the trolley pole as we came downgrade at the end of third rail NB. He was outside the rear vestibule w/ one hand holding the hand grab and the other the trolley rope. Must have been truly nasty in wet weather.

Stop crying, little baby.....You said, "The North Shore Line switched between third rail and overhead wires at Howard."

And then you included a picture with wires "over all the tracks at Howard St."

So what do you think the average reader came away with....what did the average reader understand?

And then you included a picture with a NB Electroliner beneath those wires and talked about "switching from "...admit it, you didn't realize that the Electroliner in the picture would almost always go the Skokie Valley Route and never, NEVER, put up poles at Howard St.

If you had wanted to include exceptions, you would have. But you mistakenly thought all CNS&M poles went up and down at Howard St. and you were incorrect. Now you've been corrected. Grow up and live with it.

Next time you post this picture, use this caption: "Is this NB Electroliner going to put up its poles here at Howard St.?" Caption is free for your use...No charge.

Yes they are doing a great Job i also noticed when they flag a train through a work area they dont do it like we do it here..

Instead of the arm going up and down like we do they bring the arm forward (as in come to me slowly)..

Found that fascinating..

Along with no safety glasses..
