Train went from Inwood - 207th Street to Far Rockaway where it was taken out of service at 9:30 in the evening. No need to apologize, thank you for the remainder. "The Book of Last Runs" lists the consist as (n)4425-4, 4415-4, 4398-9, 4257-6, 4433-2. My thanks to Mr Brian Camacho for e-mailing those numbers to me. The R-40's were one of the most unique cars to run on the transit system and they originally came in three flavors; slant with no a/c, slant with a/c and straight end with a/c. Larry, Redbird R33 |

I liked them before GOH and even better after, brakes, accel, A/C etc. The slants were a novelty for anyone who hadn't seen them in the IND. Chances are you never would have operated a real slant unless it had ceiling fans and iron brake shoes. THose were really good on 4th Avenue Express without timers. Now its just last leg cars going to Fulton Street, just like my tens. |

The irony is that on that date three years ago, the IND "A" line had now seen for the first time in its history a first and last day of service of a post-WWII "SMEE" rolling stock fleet each. In this case, it was with the R-10's brand new on that line for the first time on 11/20/1948, and then much later in 2009 with the slanted R-40's retiring off the road from that route. Almost like a full circle of sorts...-William A. Padron ["Euclid"] |

I remember them on the 'E' and 'F' in their early days, without all the hardware at the slant ends that was there later. Quite a feeling watching out front with just that door between you and the tunnel - no hardware blocking or obstructing the view forward. |

The angled front and the loud noise were my first impressions of express trains...Right up to the end, I could tell when a Slant was entering a station by the noise alone :) My favorite Slant memory is actually from 1999, when I caught one on the J out of Broad Street in the late morning...I remember the letter "J" was a little different from what was used on the R42s...a smaller hook, so to speak... |

I gave #4415's No.7 door a kick, just like I did in 1997 when it got stuck at B'way Junction whilst in service on the n/b Larry. When I got to 207th Street, the train went out of service. I waited and waited, and finally was told (erroneously) that it was OOS for the day. It did manage to return later that afternoon - by that time I was on my way home. wayne |

R40 and R42 front end roll signs had two styles of "J". Some signs had the "short" curl and others had the "full" curl - like an umbrella handle. I never had the pleasure of seeing a Slant R40 on the "J" but I did see many an R40M. There were numerous examples of each style of "J" throughout the R40/R42 fleet.wayne |

And I remember just as vividly the R-1/9 stock that's lurking on the opposite local track. Slants without A/C could be a real test in the summertime. Lots of track dust around the fans and inside the light diffusers. The 4350-4449 group was very popular during hot weather (as were the R40M's).wayne |

I'd only noticed the full "umbrella curl" J on the 42s and 40Ms..Maybe I paid more attention because of the uniqueness of seeing a Slant on that run...I wish I remembere the lead car #...I even remember it was in November or December, with gray skies (obviously, THAT was only visiable at street level). |

I rode on them once when they were new and only because my sister wanted to ride on them. We took a slant Fred one stop from 34th to 42nd one Saturday afternoon. I flatly refused to take an Ethel from 42nd to 14th under any circumstances and as a consequence let more than one slant go by in favor of an R-10 Abbott. |
