Brand-new Reading Company RDCs at Bethlehem PA (1962)

Great view of the station that SEPTA stopped serving in 1981. Nothing left of the RDG side of Union Station today but an abandoned signal and a part of the platform (the ROW itself has had grass planted, and of course the mayor of Bethlehem is hell-bent on turning the rest of the ROW to Saucon Tower into a "greenway"); there are tracks on the LVRR side, but the station building itself is a medical/surgery center. Bob Krone be a foam-genius.

It also voids the warranty on the Budds to use them to haul other equipment.

They should still restore service to Quakertown. Beyond that, forget it.

No, but that's not my point. The ROW is gone north of Quakertown and that's really the limit that SEPTA can claim would be sustainable as a commuter line.

Define "commuter line" in 2012 and define the "new suburbs." With the new casino and the fact that there are colleges and universities in the area of Bethlehem and Easton.

Arguably there could be decent two way ridership as a lot of people in the Quakertown area commute to the Lehigh Valley.

Note the cars in the photo are connected to "house" steam heat....you can see the connection right below the pilot. They went on display right after delivery in December 1962 to promote the new cars & improved service.

Reading Tech has 2 in their collection. 9162, shot at Leesport PA in 2006:

And the last RDC built: 9152, shot at the RCT&HS Museum in Hamburg PA last year:

I grew up meeting these cars down at Franklin St. station in Reading on a regular basis. BTW Franklin St. is making a comback. Restoration is expected to be completed sometime in 2013. This view was taken in March of this year:

But they're not part of SEPTA. If they want a train then let them fully fund an extension of the line from Quakertown up into the Lehigh Valley. SEPTA suffers enough at the hands of the suburban counties which contribute nothing and demand the world to take on more leeches by serving even more distant exurban areas.

Plenty.....look at NY state....they want MORE of them all over place........it's like a freakin cancer....and where does all the state revenue go for that stuff? into the pockets of the pols. Our roads are cumbling and the schools are still a mess...whether urban or suburban.

SEPTA's commuter area is smaller. Philly can't support an NYC sized suburban population. 50 miles from CC is about as far as you can go, except for Reading.

New York isn't Philly. Philly is smaller than NY. There just aren't enough jobs to justify such an expansive suburban radius.

Have you ever heard of reverse commuting? CC is not always the focal point just as NYC is not the focal point. I suggest you read up on the current facts and figures. You're thinking way in the past.

Reading Tech? Is that a trade school? Do they do any teaching about the RDC? Perhaps they could come up with a way to redesign it so that it could be built again today, rather than relying on Rader Railcar
