Bird droppings are underfoot and overhead at the plaza at the Pelham Bay Park station in the Bronx, and subway riders are saying enough is enough.

“This bird poop here is disgusting,” said subway rider Blanca Figueroa.

“It's filthy,” said Juan Ramirez, another commuter who said he got hit by the birds two weeks ago.

“Terrible. Very bad. Can you imagine—my coat nice and clean, I take it out of the laundry and they pooped on it,” said Ramirez.

Some riders worry it's more than messy. They’re concerned it's a health hazard.

“You don’t know what these birds are carrying,” said Figueroa.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has posted at least nine signs warning riders to not feed the pigeons.

City Councilman James Vacca said the MTA has even tried broadcasting a recording of buzzards to scare them away.

“It only ended up attracting more pigeons,” said Vacca. “You can play an opera, you can play a sonata: These pigeons are here because people are feeding them.”

Riders say they see that happening often.

“Those are nutcases. You know, people have nothing to do,” said Ramirez.

Vacca said the MTA must do more against these whopping droppings.

MTA officials say they’ll clean the floors, which are covered with poop, every two weeks. They say they’ll also install more spikes and mesh to help keep pigeons away.

MTA already tried netting to block off roosting areas, and electric strips to "buzz" them away from common perching areas. It's worked to an extent, but some smart birds found a way around the netting and perch uncomfortably in small areas.

There's nothing like seeing several "Do not feed the pigeons" signs in big, italized helvetica.

That area is pretty busy, yet cavernous under the station mezzanine. I can see why pigeons would want to roost there...

Why not introduce some hawks or falcons in the area? I kinda doubt there are many small dogs in that area :)

No small dogs. The hawks ate the dogs instead of the pigeons. Can't blame them, why eat chicken when there is beef on the table.

An owl had taken to roosting on our newly finished gold crosses on top of our towers. We had to get the contractor to come back with his crane just to instal a wire on the top of the crosses to keep the owl away. Again, we all love our owls but they poop on the gold finish and that was not acceptable to us.

Do what my neighbor did with his pigeon problem. Keep feeding them d-Con rat pellets until the problem goes away!
