When you click on the link and zoom in 4 times, you will notice the 2 sets of grates in the middle of the Conduit in the picture.
The grates on the left next to Pitkin go down to the Euclid tail tracks, famous in the day to all of the graffiti artists but also a common spot for new employees to be trained on emergency exits. The tail tracks end at Elderts Lane. There is another emergency exit that is just before the bulkhead wall that comes up on the north side Pitkin Ave. just west of Elderts. That is the Grant Ave. station house at the top of the screen.
The grates on the right is what I want to focus on. Just slightly north and east of the grates, maybe ten feet, is where the cinderblock wall is for A7 and A8. The active tracks for Pitkin yard are just to the left of these grates. Now A7 and A8 are supposed to gently curve north-east and join the mainline under Pitkin Ave. and, supposedly, 76 St. If that is the case, A7 and A8 go directly underneath some of those homes on that triangle which is bordered by Grant, Pitkin, Eldert and the Conduit.
Perhaps this could help the mystery. Do these people know about this under their homes?? I doubt it.

I think he means the space for the shell. There was an open space where a shell could have been built but unlike Utica or So 4 St no actual shell was built.

If we assume for a moment that the 76 St station shell is built like the rest of the Pitkin Av local stations, then it would be approximately centered on 76 St which would place the west (or north) end of the station at approximately 75 (or Ruby) street. In order to clear the station, the A7 and A8 yard leads would connect to the "mainline" close to a car length west of the station to allow for the short stub track between the S/B lcl and exp tracks which is characteristic of IND wye tracks that approach a mainline at a slight downgrade and which is shown on the proposed track map of the area. That would probably mean that the leads are already substantially curved towards Pitkin Ave by the time they reach the intersection of N Conduit and Grant. They would also be just to the east of the existing K3/4 and K5 yard leads which come up beneath and just south of Grant Av station respectively. That would probably place the point of intersection of A7 and A8 with the mainline at a point a bit east of Eldert Lane. That of course is only an estimate based on what I can observe from looking at the Google map and trying to move my view back and forth between the Pitkin Yd portal and Pitkin Av.

But there was/is a shell. I know what Brennan's site says about that open space (4 spaces) that is very visable above from the platforms. I admit that I don't know why it was built this way. In fact, I think 2nd Ave. gets my vote as the most peculiar station of all. Between its very odd mezzanine with multiple levels (most now closed), the open space, the closed off entrance/exits at the south end(behind the booth), the tail tracks, the secret mezz above the tail tracks (that someone here mentioned about) and the shell for Second Ave. Those empty spaces are at about the 3rd north motor of a train but the shell, is right at the north end, above the 1st/2nd north motor. If one looks up, just like someone else described in this thread, there are 5 spaces, 4 for tracks and the center one for, I assume, an express platform. This center space has a provision for a staircase from each platform on the F. You can see evidence in the ceiling. Think of it as layout similar to 34/7 or 34/8. Now the reason I say was/is in my first sentence is that where the shell is, the TA constructed crew facilites in this space when the V line came into being. I did not visit this space before these facilities were constructed. I was able to gain access to what is left of the shell by going through a door in the facility and stepping down to the REAL floor and looking at the shell from under the floor of the crew facility. It was quite something to see. Is there someone here that visited this spot before the facilites were constructed? Does anyone know if the 2nd Ave. stop was supposed to be an express for certain?? When I looked at the shell, I did not see any evidence of a middle platform. I wish I had my camera that day. Imagine if you were in the north mezz of 2nd Ave. and you just went through the turnstile, straight ahead would be the downtown local platform of the 2nd Ave. subway. That wall you see today was really only meant to be temporary similar to the wall at the north end of the N/B at Broadway on the G.

And that also explains why the tunnel is so "tall" at the south end of the station - room needed to be made for the ramp up to the Bridge approach ramps. Had it been built, it would have been something to see.

Conduit is a PERFECT place for a subway line...wide median ..long enough to make a impact to the nab..a short extension about two stations.
