They can't run south of Union City since there's a station in the tunnel that would probably require massive upgrades to it's ventilation system to use DMU's. Any extension northward has to be electrified.

There are plenty of buses for them to move north in, no shortage of them, as well as automobiles. A train or trolley has nothing to do with it.

Into Hoboken via the former Northern Branch. The state seems to not know how to use the Bergen Arches; run those trains through there to East End instead of building more highway lanes into the Holland Tunnel.

That's nonsense. The RVL runs through several varying demographic areas as well. The HBLR's costs per unit length (for building on an existing right of way, remember) are four times that of building a new high-speed right of way in France, FCOL.

Police Chief Michael Bruno says he finally knows the meaning of the phrase, "We're getting railroaded."

Bruno was one of many municipal officials and residents to voice opposition to the proposed extension of the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail line into Bergen County at a packed hearing Tuesday night.

Plans were announced in December to extend the line, which currently terminates in North Bergen in Hudson County, into the eastern parts of Bergen County. The project, which is still in search of funding, has been a cause for celebration and concern for communities along the proposed route.

NJ Transit held the first two of four hearings on the plan — which put forth two proposals, one that would terminate in Englewood and the other, "preferred" alternative that would end in Tenafly — right in the heart of opposition to the project.

Tenafly residents, who made clear their opposition in a 2010 referendum, ticked off a litany of issues with the project, from its impacts on parking and traffic to public safety concerns and issues with how the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) — essentially NJ Transit's initial version of the expansion proposal — was prepared.

Bruno expressed frustration with the process by which the DEIS was prepared, claiming that he was told his questions at previous hearings would be addressed, but that NJ Transit officials had not fulfilled their promise to work with municipal officials. He cited a number of issues acknowledged by the DEIS that aren't answered with clear mitigation strategies.

For example, he said the DEIS makes clear that increased railroad crossings will effect the ability of emergency vehicles to move efficiently through town.

"Anybody that lives on the east side of town is potentially looking at a delayed response from police cars, fire trucks and ambulances," Bruno said. "Who on Earth would find this an acceptable trade off for a ride to North Bergen?"

NJ Transit representative Jeff Stiles told the crowd prior to Bruno's remarks that emergency vehicles could be equipped with devices that would allow them to communicate with train operators, and that first responders would be given priority at train crossings.

Opponents in Tenafly argue that the project impacts their community negatively in ways that it doesn't in other towns. Most notably, they say the tracks would cut right through the town's business district, essentially bisecting the community, whereas in other towns the tracks run along the western edge.

"It would not be good for Tenafly, we cannot support the preferred alternative," Tenafly Mayor Peter Rustin told NJ.com in an interview. "But we have no problem with it going to Rt. 4, which would be their second alternative."

"It's not a matter of, 'We don't want it in our town,' it's not a matter of us being elitist," Rustin said. "This would really have a tremendously negative impact on our community."

Warren Vincentz, a councilman in Ridgefield, which would be the first stop on the extended line, was one of the few voices in favor of the project at the Tenafly hearing.

"I want to share with you that just as you have all these people out here tonight, all this support against it, we have twice as much in Ridgefield in support of it," Vincentz told the crowd. "Because we want the light rail."

Vincentz urged opponents of the project to at least support the alternate route, which would terminate just south of Tenafly in Englewood.

Two more hearings are scheduled for Thursday at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza Englewood Hotel. John R. Durso, Jr., a spokesman for NJ Transit, told NJ.com he expected to hear more testimony in support of the project at the Englewood hearings.

"We've found that opinions have varied throughout the routes," Durso said. "We've heard opinions here tonight in Tenafly that differ greatly from a number of communities throughout the entire corridor. But we're here to listen."

Additional hearings scheduled:
Two more hearings on the extension of the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail line will be held in Englewood at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 26, at the Crowe Plaza Englewood Hotel, located at 401 S. Van Brunt Street.

A map provided by NJ Transit shows the proposed course of the extension.



NJ Transit displayed two alternative plans. The "preferred" plan would extend to the northern end of Tenafly. The alternative would terminate in Englewood.

Yes but the Raritan Valley Line (what's left of it) has been running through those areas all along, with no break in service. Had it been lying dormant since the 1960's and they were trying to reactivate passenger service I'm willing to bet it'd be a completely different story. Cranford and Westfield would have a crap fit with a train stopping in their towns that also stopped in Plainfield, Dunellen and Bound Brook.

CSX is almost dead itself. Wonder how much fight it'll have eventually? They've got less of an argument to resist this than for the Lehigh Line between Hunter and Aldene.

I support any light-rail project that reduces the number of cars on the roads. Also, the DMUs pollute. That's why the light-rail is the best idea.
I hate NIMBYs! They've killed many rail projects over the years! I say build the extension of the HBLR! Screw the NIMBYs!!! If they don't like it, nobody is forcing them to stay! MOVE, NIMBY bastards!!!

I support the West Shore Commuter rail too. People haven't had any rail service since the New York Central RR shut down all passenger service around 1959. They claimed "lack of ridership," but they purposely eliminated the ferry service from Manhattan to the West Shore terminal in Weehawken. If people can't get to the train, then ridership drops, making it seem like dwindling ridership!
There is definitely a market for passenger service restoration on the West Shore. The West Shore originally went from Weehawken, NJ to Albany, with a branch at Kingston that went to Oneonta.
The New York Ontario also used their tracks for the southern part of their trip until their demise in 1957.
FYI, I am selling New York Central "West Shore" timetables on ebay, as well as many other divisions, including the long-gone Putnam Division, which ceased on May 29, 1958.

And Tenafly is right on that border. There's a reason why no significant service restoration north of Tenafly has ever been discussed, and it's not population density.

I don't know why NJT wants to fight this fight when simply cutting the line back to Englewood would NOT put the project at risk. Unlike other NIMBY fights, it doesn't put the whole project at risk. The idiots in Jamesburg and Red Bank put the whole MOM thing at risk, it's just a different situation.

While I don't live or work in the area, I'd say this opposition is pretty short-sighted. Expanding ther HBLR could take a lot of cars off the road, and I bet would ultimately benefit the business community, despite some short-term pain.

CSX is doing just fine financially, and is under no obligation to anyone to host a passenger train to anyone on that line. There is also a tunnel cleared for doublestack by shifting the remaining track to the center on the former double-track right of way.

No, that's a canard; they could limit rail service stopping in their towns if that was such an issue. They also have the 59 and 113 buses going through that run mostly parallel to the RVL.

And the 49 used to go to Bound Brook, even for a long while after having been converted to bus. When I still lived in Elizabeth NJ, the old route 49 trolley tracks would sometimes be exposed whenever road work was done on West Jersey Street and/or Jersey Avenue; I sometimes wonder if it really would have been all that expensive to keep the road/trolley infrastructure as it was instead of making a mad dash to convert to buses . . .

At Bound Brook, there was a trolley to Raritan, and another that went to New Brunswick. Bound Brook was also served by the B&O, RDG, & LV.
