[NIMBY] Tenafly, NJ mayor vows resistance to Hudson-Bergen Light Rail extenstion plan

Flanked by more than two dozen citizens, half of them holding "STOP the LIGHT RAIL in TENAFLY" signs, Mayor Peter Rustin said any attempts by NJ Transit to restore light rail service in the borough "will be met by the stiffest resistance possible."

Rustin held a press conference downtown an hour and a half before the first of four public hearings will be held on the proposed Northern Branch Corridor project - a plan that would extend NJ Transit's existing Hudson-Bergen Light Rail service into Bergen County. There are three options: do nothing, extend the system to Englewood, or extend it further to Tenafly.

Rustin described NJ Transit as a powerful state agency that has overlooked and ignored concerns by Tenafly that the project would tear $8 million in commercial property - which generates $200,000 in revenue - out of the town in order to make room for the rail system, parking and two stations. It would also bifurcate the downtown business district and bring noise pollution, Rustin said.

"The project has been designed with total disregard for the concerns of the residences and businesses in Tenafly," said Rustin, standing outside the community's historic rail station, which was transformed to Cafe Angelique six years ago.

Rustin said he has spoke with State Sen. Loretta Weinberg and Congressman Rothman about his concerns, and that they have "assured me they would only support this project as far as Route 4," he said.

Council members Marth Kerge and Nadia LaMastra were among the roughly 40 people at the press conference. Reading jointly from a prepared statement, they said a Draft Environmental Impact Statement, released by the Federal Transit Adminstration and NJ Transit, last month, was based on old data.

The DEIS is a document that spells out all impacts the project could have on the environment, including how noise, air quality, wetlands, land and parking would be affected. Durso declined to speak directly to the allegations, but said NJ Transit has consistently met with local officials in Tenafly and surrounding communities to listen to their concerns and incorporate their concerns as part of that process."

Charles Ingoglia, an NJ Transit representative on the project, said the option to extend the light rail into Tenafly would provide two stations in the community. One, the Tenafly North station, would need about 40 spaces, all of which would be supplied by street parking, the second station, close to the Cresskill border, would have about 560 spaces, he said.

People in the north would drive to that station and park, while at the downtown station, riders are expected to walk to the station.
Rustin said he doesn't believe people would walk to the station.

Pork projects like HBLR on the general railway network really ought to be shut down. $82 million per mile, plus shutting the railroad out of the general railway network, is unconscionable, never mind the business about the extremely low fare recovery ratio.

Arschlochen!

As I suggested before, put the northern terminal at the Englewood-Tenafly border, and let all the people from surrounding towns drive down Tenafly streets to board the trains.

Huh? If people are expected to walk to the more southerly station, why would it need 560 parking spaces? Or any dedicated parking at all?

I pay my taxes, thank you very much. I am not a leech.

It's very interesting that all I do is point out that flag lapel pins don't follow party lines, and all of a sudden you decided I don't pay taxes.

You people like you think you have a moral high ground, I think you don't have any morals at all. It's a wrong to fry someone who kills people and finds pleasuer in it, but ripping apart a baby before it's even born just becuase the mother doesn't FEEL LIKE IT is A OK?!?

And don't get me started on the whole "it's a human right" BS you liberls use to try to justify everything. what is or isn't a right is up to the judgement of people. Rights only exist if we want them to exist.

Now your gonna start with your whole "new world order" shit, about how the "new amendments are gonna come after me". Let me tell you something, people like you are the reason this country is going down hill in the first place. you're too God dam preocupied with the stupid crap. There are children staving every day in this country, but that can wait, it's much more important that two dudes be allowed to marry.

Want to provide everyone with medical care, how about you find a way to lower the costs to the consumer, and not just dump it on everyone else.

You want to know why I think conservitly?

I'll tell you.

My Great-Great Grandfather Patrick came to New York from Ireland around mid 1800s. He never got a handout, and never asked for one. He was derised and mocked for being Irish and Catholic. He got no respect here and got none back home. Prior to the english taking over the island, my ansestors were quite literaly kings. We even had a castle. but then came generations of dirt like treatment, just because of how we were. Old Paddy didn't let that stop him.

My great grandfather didn't ask for help ether, but instead ran to sign up when WWI started. My grandfather was legaly blind, but he worked like anyone else, taking three buses to and from work every day. my father overcame a learning disabilty no one realized was there to become one of the most respected cops in the NYPD, and I did the same to become the first member of my family to graduate from college with a 4 year degree.

We only ever ask for real help in our darkest hours.

we don't genoerate a burden. We do our best to carry our own. that is our legacy as a family. That is who I am.

Because the FRA DMU will cost far more on a per passenger basis and have operational costs far in excess of the HBLRT alternative. You've been told this innumerable times, yet you ignorantly continue to advocate an alternative which is marginal at best.

And they need to pay it ALL back.
I've worked all my life and am just getting by. my tax rate is nearly zero thanks to the Democrats and to the fact that my pay is so low. Times were better under Clinton and Al Gore offered the promise of continued prosperity but we all know what happened to that. The business community needs to be taken behind the woodshed and made to realize that they stand to lose more than the middle class if the nation collapses. And they WILL have to sacrifice for a change.

The RDC was pretty good.
The SPV was a disaster, but then the operator's sabotaged it, i.e. let's pull out that crankshaft and disable a power truck so we don't have to crews it with a fireman.

I'm not using it, I'm exposing it. Look at the demographics of the areas currently served by HBLR, and then look at Tenafly.

My son is dyslexic, the are many types or degrees of this type of challenge.
One help, is to use script. It ties the letters together so they can't move around.
Another is using a light blue background.
These fixes don't work for every dyslexic, just some.
A high percentage of dyslexics are "lefties", and more males then females.
My son is a master electrician, he struggled in school, went on to college and finished.
Most dyslexic are bright and work harder to over come their challenges and achieve success. The spell checker is a great tool for everyone.

The RDC was certainly reliable. Some still run a half century later.
