The 6th Ave El on Church St expanded to 3 tracks at Dey St. The Cortlandt and Rector St stations had a center track that was a runaround track in the Steam Era and a storage track after electrification. The center track South of Rector St was a turnback after electification. |

Selkirk posted a good reason for cable, but there's probably something else at play too.My full time job used to be administering a campus network, and even directly plugged into The Internet (as in, nothing but gigabit cables between my office computer and some regional backbone) I couldn't get upload speeds faster than maybe 20mbit. I'm not sure what my download was, speedtest sites didn't show it accurately and trying to torrent the entire Debian installation (~8 dvds) had the data coming in faster than the hard drive could write it... I stopped getting I/O errors when I capped it at 500mbit though :). |

Provisioning for T-1 and DS-3 circuits is actually symmetrical. Cable and ADSL have a need for it being Asymmetrical due to reverse path bandwidth constraints and "concentrating" in the case of the latter. But all other services have provisioning for equal up and down bandwidth. You don't HAVE to use it all though. After all, server farms tend to have little other than clicks coming inbound, but have to shovel a lot of data OUT. :) Your observation though is the reason why asymmetric is tolerable to most people and why it didn't require cable to expand their reverse path to a higher frequency split. |

Somebody didn't set up their FIFO buffer properly. :)As to the cap on your upstream, it was probably set in the Cisco nearby to cap it. The pipe itself is symmetrical, but routers can be set to throttle at any rate desired. All part of "load balancing" configs. |

You can keep the high-quality pictures on your own hard drive, and use the 'share' tool in Picasa to upload them to the web at reduced resolution automatically. |

You're welcome ... this is not to say that cable couldn't move the upper frequency limit for reverse feed to a higher crossover frequency and up that bandwidth substantially (and some cable companies did) ... but it would come at the loss of numerous TV channels worth of bandwidth, something they're not likely to want to do. Systems that have higher crossovers are older systems with dual cables and there's not that many that built dual cable. |

I checked the configs of all of the devices under my control, there was no such cap. It may have been on the next provider's end, but the question would be... why?? Afaik we paid for symmetric.. and even if we didn't, once you get on the level of buying gigabits of bandwidth, they don't cap you, they simply meter it. They *want* you to cross your limit so they can send you the overage bill (which can easily get to $tens of thousands).Since it wasn't impacting customers no one gave enough of a crap to look into it further. Error counts weren't incrementing either, so it probably wasn't a physical problem. I guess I regret that the most, never figuring out why the upload sucked... |

Dunno what to tell you, but someone was capping it. Last time I paid for a DS3 @ 144Mbps, I made sure I was getting that both ways. And we did. And that's the max ... we'd have had to buy another pipe to get more. Sounds like you guys were getting stiffed though if the limit wasn't in your plant. |
