Nice pics! Those couplers look awfully big for a redbird! Wonder how many freight cars they could pull?

Nice, Bob. I remember the year they arrived at IRM. There was a big fight over accepting them because one faction wanted only equipment that ran in Chicagoland to be displayed while another faction wanted any and all electric equipment.

Not to mention the fight over keeping equipment authentic vs. operable - i.e., putting poles on cars that never had them.

They had no choice. Even so, they had to put poles on the 6000-Series married pairs. The 4000s (the "plushies," anyway) came ready-to-run with trolley poles, but they were an exception.

IIRC, the 6000s got poles before it became a heated issue. The 2000s are still sitting dormant with no poles.

Now that you mention it, you're right. Those 2000s still don't have poles.

Speaking of the 4000s, I rode on them two years ago on the same day Thomas the Tank Engine was there. They dragged out every single commuter car in their collection to accommodate the mob of people. Anyway, it was a three-car train of 4000s (4290-4410-4412) and just as we got onto the mainline, the breaker tripped and we lost power. We coasted to a stop and when the motorman radioed that we'd lost power, the response he got was, "Ouch!" About a minute later the power came back on and we proceeded. Those cars can really move; the gears got up to A-440.

I heard 2 theories about the 2000's - don't know who to believe:

1) IRM is unsure if the bodies can handle the roof-top stress
2) Puritans don't want them. That means they will have to wait 20-25 years for the Skokie 3200's to get there as playmates.

That was one theory.
The other, or an extension of the ACF one, is that they wanted a sturdy battleship to run the electric operation so their more delicate and older Chicagoloand equipment can rest more.

They were as originally built (H2CA coupler instead of the usual H2C) but when they went through GOH the couplers were removed and the cars were linked with a drawbar as was done on the R29/33/36 cars at the factory. The R27/30's were built the same way but I think they stayed with couplers until they were scrapped in the 1990's. The museum seems to have done a good job repainting the areas that got tagged when the cars were still on NYCT property. They even left some rust spots at the bottom - that makes them look like they did in their later days in service.
