It was, but on the later issues of reversers, the copper ring that held the plug chain to the reverser was not soldered so it was easy to remove the plug which I did. I carried the plug and ring in the back pocket of my pinstriped overalls (remember those?) in case I had to reattach them in a hurry. |

Those chains occssionally caused problems when the operating car had no cover on the master controller (as happened one day on the "L" line when I was a new RCI) |

Until only a few years ago, the only Fulton Express service was rush hours - so effectively, an "A" running local from Lefferts Boulevard is the same as what a "C" would do today. Back in the old days in the schedule office, some local politician would call to request certain service adjustments. The individual in charge responded to the person that to do so would jeopardize the existing fare structure. The pol would never call again about that issue. All the MTA would need to do to justify such a service change would be to claim it was needed in order to either preserve the existing fare or to keep any fare increases to a minimum. As an aside, back when I was a M/M in 1969/70 and for a short time after I became a T/D, the As ran local in Bkln and the Es ran express during the rush hours so the A from both Lefferts and far Rock ran local in Bkln 24/7 anyhow. |

Posted by Randyo on Mon Apr 4 13:48:06 2011, in response to Re: R-32 on the A, posted by Railman718 on Mon Apr 4 09:11:48 2011. As we say here in Brooklyn, not for nothin' but every now and again, the press rags on MTA employees who earn humongous salaries year after year. The problem is that nobody bothers to mention that the MTA's policies create situations that cause no lunch and late clear allowances to be paid not to mention the false economy of eliminating jobs by generating runs with a large amount of OT built into them even though the pay allowances for an extra run or two with less OT often result in fewer total hours paid out on any given work program. The fault is not with the employees but with the agency itself. It also often has little to do with the work rules since overtime and other allowance are mandated by federal labor laws anyhow so they are not under the control of either the employee or the agency. |

R68/68As don't run on the (Q) anymore, I haven't seen one on the line since last summer, and that was only during the AM Rush so I guess they had to put that 68A on there to make service. And during the aftermath of that huge snowstorm last year. Ever since those service cuts went into effect there have been no 68s on the (Q) regularly like they was before. |

Posted by Randyo on Mon Apr 4 18:54:14 2011, in response to Re: R-32 on the A, posted by Joe V on Mon Apr 4 17:44:41 2011. there were only 3 Es that originated at Lefferts in the Am and 3 that terminated there in the PM and they ran at long intervals so they really didn't help that much. The Es only came from Rock Pk, with far Rock service being provided solely by the A. Rockaway service is not the issue here since even if the C were to be sent to Lefferts, the Rockaway passengers would still have their express service. If the C were to be made the principal Lefferts service, the MTA could always have a few selected A trains from/to Lefferts in the rush hours similar to the Es that provided that service in the old days. |

Back either in 1959 or 1960, the E began running express in Brooklyn while the A ran local. This was due to the R 10's having dynamic brakes, making them more suitable for local service. When R38's-42's began running on the E, the A became express again in January of 1973. |

I was too young to be very railroad savvy in those days, but I did ride them on the A express and they seemed just fine to me. AFAIK, the 50 R-16s were all WH equipped and WH R-16s gave less trouble than the GE ones. I always liked the R-16s until I had to operate them when I was a M/M in 1969 on the 4 Av Lcl. They were the worst pieces of junk I ever operated. |
