They got more the equivalent of an SMS rather than a full overhaul. The time they got out of the cars was sufficient. They were heavy cars and a/c would have made them heavier. NYCT had a business plan to have a 100% a/c fleet, they did not want to wait till the R143's came in! Plus, weren't they gone when the R68A came in anyway? I can't remember the time line, sorry. The cars done in house: before the R10 upgrade the shop forces were not trained in giving cars a real good overhaul. The R10 and R30 upgrade gave them experience on how to do a more thorough job on the 110 R42's (very debatable on how they turned out because they needed much more work than budgeted) and half the R44's. |

The GEs were FUN to operate in the Rockaways. Summers with the end doors hooked open, motors that made noise and fans whirling away are not the same. It sucks they got rid of the GOHs to budget cuts than to real retirement |

Had they remained, there would not have been such a car crunch in the late 1990's. Perhaps 63rd St opens sooner. They did not need A/C and could have been limited in service during the height of the summer. |

The R68's replaced the R16 and most R27's. The R68A's replaced the R10's. Ironically, nothing replaced the R30's, they were expendable when the GOH program was complete, all cars had returned to service and the re-shuffling of services in late 1992 reduced the need for cars on some lines, most notably the C. |

They are marked as 207th on nycsubway.org, and even though I've only been there once, it looks and feels to me like 207th. I thought the overhaul was done at Coney Island as well. Someone more familiar with how the shops looked back in 1985-86 should be able to tell definitively. |

I still think the green should have been used universally on the B division overhauls. The R30's did stick out wherever they ran due to the fact that they looked so much like the IRT cars. |

Man they were in rough shape before the overhaul. Makes me wish they could have attached the estate of the guy who invented spray paint to help pay for its removal. They looked really snappy in that redbird getup.BTW, did'nt some of the IRT equiptment get rebuilt with the green paint?? |

I thought that some of the newer cars suffered more during this era than the R30's. The R42's especially, which were an absolute mess by 1986. A dark R27/30 was almost unheard of. They usually were well lit and the fans worked during the summer and the heat worked in the winter. Many suffered from flat wheels (especially the cars on the 6th Ave shuttle....yikes) and so were noisy. Usually a J rider was relieved to see one of these things approaching their station, instead of an R16. It tripled your chances of getting to your destination without suffering a breakdown. |

But the weight distrubution would be more concentrated on the R-30 than the standards since the standards were 67 footers as opposed to the 60 ft length of the '30's.I suspect that might have been a bit too stressful on the older elevated structures, as in from B'way Junction to Elderts Lane on the J for example. |

BTW, did'nt some of the IRT equiptment get rebuilt with the green paint??Yes, a few R33s assigned to Jerome got the green treatment. I don't know how many cars, but I think it was just one ten-car train. In those days I was enjoying riding the #4 line as it had the green R33s and at least 2 trains of R36 (I think Flushing and ML) and of course those awesome brand new R-62s. |

They had about hundred or so painted green as well as 1 lone R22 and they were in service on the (5) line as well. I was a little thing but I also remember when they started mixing them with fresh redbirds that started 2 appear on the (2) line. I'll never 4get being in the street and seeing a red green and white train pull into Gun Hill Rd in 1988. I wish I had a camera back then but all have r memeories those is just as good. It was a site 2 see. |

Yea but they would have 2 had put 2 Air Condition units under the train simliar to the R32's where the R26 thru 36's had 1 unit similar to that used on the R62's. It would've made the R30 way overweight since the car was up there in poundage already. I know the R68's r overweight if u ask me but I think TA didn't want 2 waste the time and money on car that was doomed 2 junked in 3 or so years. |

Those Shop photos are great and are some of the only ones i have ever seen of the R30s being overhauled. That does look like the "Main Shop" in Coney Island though, look at the row of R30s with a unrebuilt R46 peeking out.To my knowledge,no R30s were overhauled at 207th Street,as all "Rebulder's Plates" inside the R30s all said "Overhauled By Coney Island Overhaul Shops" with a 1987 or 1988 date on them.I miss the R30s and i too would have liked to have seen them stick around for a bit longer than they did.The R44s fate was very similar to the R30s-more a case of not beeing needed any longer rather than just being worn out.I see a pair of R30s every day as i pass the Coney Island Shops, however these are a pair of "Unrebuilt" Westinghouse R30s now in use as Classrooms in CI Yard.I do miss them,as well as the older "LAHT" Cars which are also now gone.Somehow, the R160s just are not all that interesting.Time marches on i guess. |

There was no need to use an AC equipped R30 on the lighter built eastern division BMT lines. They could have sent them to Pitkin for use on the C, which, by late 1982 would have kept them underground.Even if giving them this more significant overhaul was not sound, simply retiring them and replacing them with nothing was stupid. They should have thought about a supplemental R68 order. |

AFAIK there were only 10 R33's painted green in 1986, along with one single R22 and one single R17. I never saw the latter, but I rode the green R33's many times on the West Side IRT in 1987. |

Unlike the R46, their structure was not made totally from stainless steel. In fact, only the shells of the R38, R40 and R42's were stainless steel. Frame rot did in all these fleets, while the R32's, wisely made entirely of stainless steel, are still plodding along. |

Canarsie yard:For the first time ever, I am impressed with graffiti: ENY Yard: These are labelled as being at Coney Island, so perhaps all these shop pics are there, instead of 207th: Take a clean break from the IND? Depressing filth we just accepted as normal back then: I don't remember any redbird R30's retaining their original salmon colored seats, so this might be a fluke or an incomplete job: |

Chris they had a lot of them and they were assigned 2 the (5) line. They even had the stainless steel framing around the windows. Some of that treatment was done when the cars were white. I remember going 2 the Bronx Zoo back then with a class and we rode the (5) 2 West Farms Square and we got a green hornet...lol. Then as we're going down the line u see more of them. I thought this would b the color 4 them cuz the on the (2) they would b getting in the Redbirds fresh from MK. That's when TA started assigning the cars 2 the lines n' stuff. Notice how the the green cars had the black tape under the numbers when they were done? Those were assigned 2 East 180th St. So they did have a ton of them done up like that. The 91xx when from white 2 red and u can tell by the pardon my french, shitty paint work that was done on the roofs and car bodies. I was a little thing but I remember when the IRT was coming back together during that "clean car" program. It was an interesting time. |

That sounds about right, I never saw more than one green "redbird" train at any given time.Still prefer the green to the red. |
