I believe there was significant pressure to not close the 3rd Ave el, but there were vague promises of a replacement subway running alongside the Metro North ROW. It was also the South Bronx who needed it the most, and we all know where these people rated in the early 70's on the political scale. It was just too "brown" for people in power to care about. |
