The problem is that before the line was through routed through the Montague St tunnel, Chambers St was the north terminal for Southern Div trains coming in from the 4 Av and Brighton Lines. As for the Eastern Division, the current M Line lvg Metropolitan is in fact a northbound train since it travels north along 6 Av to get back to Queens. The only reason that the confusion came in was because of the through routing of the Jamaica Line with the Brighton lcl which made it easier to call all CI bound trains Southbound. Unless and until the J line is returned to its former status as northbound to Manhattan and southbound to Jamaica it will be evn more confusing since trains on oppositely described directions will continue to follow each other while still traveling in the same physical direction namely northbound Js following southbound Ms and vice versa. |
