I've had a number of encounters over railfan photography since I started in July of 1958. During that period, I have taken over 90,000 slides and photos. The first encounter was in Boston in 1959 at Mattapan with a MTA employee. "Hey kid, you can't pictures!" Over the next 42 years incidents were few and far-between.Post 9/11, it's a different story: NJT, Metro North, Miami and Pittsburgh. These encounters have been met with direct action -- i.e., letters of complaint, web reporting, urging other complainants to follow suit. As a result, progress has been made. For example, following my run-in with chief of Miami-Dade Metro, Eric Muntan, in May 2009, my letter of complaint and subsequent postings on Subchat and photography blogs, led to a clarification of non-commercial photography, which was posted on a number of websites. At the urging of myself and others, an encounter at Freeman St. between "rtype3995" and NYPD led to the elimination of harassment of non-commercial photographers on the subway system. Since 9/11, others have picked up the ball, such as BMT lines, and hopefully we will continue to be successful in our battle to protect our freedoms. Basically, all I want is to be left alone to pursue my hobby. I'd like to express my thanks and appreciation to those who have supported me in my endeavors. |
