The reason that I heard and recalled that the last section of the Third Avenue El stayed up for another 3-4 years was because there were still active feeder cables from the old 161st Street substation that fed power into the IRT subway at 149th Street. When the new St. Ann's Avenue/Westchester Avenue substation was built and installed for power onto the West Farms section of that route, then the plans went ahead to demolish the remaining elevated section along Third Avenue, being completed around 1977.-William A.
