The Bronx-Whitestone Bridge is a close cousin in design to the Tacoma Narrow Bridge(Galloping Gertie). Over the years BWB was retrofitted with Trusses, diagonal bracing (40's)and a mass damper system in the 80's to provide more stability in high winds. This along with a thicker roadway made the bridge heavier and caused more wear and tear. The trusses were removed and replaced by fairings and other revisions made the bridge lighter. |
