Can anyone on this board tell me why it takes and hour to shut off an engine? It is a big waist of fuel and pollution.

It does not.

A diesel locomotive can be turned off in a matter of seconds. There are fuel cut-offs on both sides by the fuel tanks, there is an emergency cutoff on the rear bulkhead of the operating compartment, as well as inside of the engine compartment.

Finally, you can just shut it down by pulling the throttle out and then pushing past idle into stop.

All it takes is a second.

no problem at all.

But... if it is cold out side, then you have to drain all of the cooling water and domestic water on board the locomotive, and don't forget to drain the batteries too.

Locomotives and other large diesel engines cannot use anti-freeze.
