Believe me, I don't much like the Democrats either.First they passed a stimulus bill which was way too small, and then a climate change bill which didn't crack down on polluters in any meaningful sense, and now they seem poised to "compromise" on a public health plan which is itself a compromise from single payer. And Obama is apparently either too cowardly or too corrupt to prosecute Bush & Company, and has apparently decided he's having too much fun playing with all the illegal powers Bush seized for the White House. :( That's the problem— conservative policies have proven to be utter failures, yet there are no adults in Washington who are ready to admit it and try something that works. Sure, it'll be tricky trying to get out of this mess, but it doesn't take much more than basic common sense to reinstate Glass-Steagall and bring back the 90% top marginal tax rate (policies that were successful in America's past), institute a public health plan or single payer (policies that are successful in every other modern democracy), tax polluters and provide incentives for clean energy (policies that will be necessary to our long-term economic health) and ban torture, prosecute those who ordered it, did it, and covered for it, and reaffirm that anyone accused of wrongdoing is entitled to a fair trial (policies so obvious that anybody who opposes them is almost certainly an idiot or malicious). |
