In Philly, that nearly happened or did happen even though the equipment in question was owned by the city and not by SEPTA,

That would be the type of cars pictured below. Not sure if this pair were the ones scrapped. Set aside for the Trolley Museum of NY, they were scrapped by the City of Philadelphia without consulting SEPTA first. Now they're all gone. Thank you City of Brotherly Shove!
