You really gotta feel out the situation, and use some finesse. If the cop is seriously the prick of misery, there's no point in beating up his fist with your face. A reasonable cop will listen and once satisfied that you're a guy with a positive connection to society, will bid farewell. I've encountered both, and have a set of rules for each. I do carry the printed memos, rules, etc so there's something to look at. One thing I do though, even if I'm beating a strategic retreat, is to protest.I have some rules of thumb that seem to work. - If I see police I go over to them rather than wait for them to come to me. - I call them "officer" just like I call others "conductor" or "doctor" or "bartender". Well that last one is more nostalgic ;P - I point out that I'm not with the bad guys. - I tell them what I'm after today, like that there's F trains running on this A line or there's a museum train running on the line, or just that it's Smith-9th, a postcard view. - I carry the rules in case there's debate. I use the same terms I use with clients, like "I'm going to politely disagree" or "I differ with your interpretation" or whatever. There's no point in getting in the guy's face and if he is a prick, I just leave and come back later. There's no such thing as a victory with an officer other than if he buys you a beer. Now, I suggest an immediate call to the ACLU and the retention of legal cousel. Complete agreement. your pal, Fred |
