The R30's lasted for another 3.5 years after the R10's were retired. They were scrapped for no other reason than that they lacked AC. It would create a car shortage which wasn't resolved until the R143's arrived. I still think that the R30's could have been kept until 2002, with their usage during the height of summer limited to rush hours as much as possible.
